The Beach House

Occupying a significant site on Campbell Parade ‘The Beach House’ occupies a site created by the sub-division of ‘The Hotel Bondi’. This hotel is an iconic landmark in Australia’s premier beach side setting. The project allowed the original elements of the Hotel to be renovated, restored and made commercially viable through a modern apartment and retail addition. The modern addition is sympathetic to the original hotel in its scale, form and articulation. The provision of a through site link was the main planning response, which re-established the freestanding form of the hotel and provided a pedestrian retail laneway that connects Campbell Parade to Gould Street.

A galleria is established through the site to connect Campbell Parade with Gould Street, creating a lively pedestrian retail arcade. It allows the hotel to be seen as an important free-standing building, to which the Beach House creates a contemporary counterpoint by means of coloured façade panels, patterned windows, awnings and pergolas.

Most apartments are planned to have views of the beach, even some of the apartments located to the rear of the site. Internal light wells provide light, ventilation, and an intimate garden outlook in contrast to the ocean views. Interior layouts are calm and simple, maximising the sense of light, spaciousness and views to the beach – qualities that are evocative of a traditional holiday beach house.
