From the outset, this kitchen and scullery was to be the heart of the client’s newly built architectural home. Part of a large open plan living, dining and entertaining space with stunning views, I was tasked with creating a welcoming space that catered to three growing children as well as friends, extended family and neighbours.
Lucky enough to own a limited-edition Dick Frizzell decorated refrigerator, the clients requested this piece of uniquely New Zealand art be showcased in the space. Also on their wish list was the use of grained timber and a contemporary option to display their glassware. A beverage fridge was to be situated in the island and needed to be quickly and easily accessed from the adjacent media room during important rugby matches. The scullery was primarily to be for food and small appliance storage, with a large ceramic butler’s sink a ‘must have’.
Starting with the feature fridge, I framed this in a chunky oak veneer box to give this piece the attention it rightfully deserves. Dark tinted glass display cabinets run the width of the kitchen and reflect the architectural ply ceiling. LED lighting within the units showcase the contents and gives a lovely softened glow. I elected to powder coat the slimline aluminium frames black to link with the darker elements of the kitchen, and to ensure they would disappear into the space. The extractor unit was clad in oak veneer to break the expanse of glass, and to give textural relief.
All under bench cabinetry is wrapped in oak veneer - the strong grain giving life and subtle movement to the space. By orientating the beverage fridge to face the media room easy access is ensured, and the repetition of the boxed oak frame ensures the appliance does not detract from the main design features of the kitchen. Negative handle recesses provide a sleek, streamlined detail, and together with the horizontal grain of the oak veneer strengthen the lineal elements of the kitchen.
Ample drawers provide easily accessible storage, and a technology drawer was included in the island to provide a discreet charging station for the family’s cell phones and tablets.
The scullery became the ‘business’ part of the kitchen. This is where breakfasts are prepared, school lunches are made, and dishes are dumped. We chose to situate the dishwasher in the scullery next to the ceramic butlers sink, providing a serious dishes station. Open shelf storage above bench provides easy snacking access for all family members, and LED strip lighting ensures it is a well-lit preparation space.
This is a kitchen of contrasts – dark and light, matte and glossy, thick and thin, classic and contemporary. Designed to reflect the different personalities of those who inhabit this home, this family hub feels comfortable and homely while still being a strikingly beautiful space.
