It was the physical footprint of this East Melbourne two-story villa that first caught the eye for the homeowners. The location was perfect and the feel of the home including a good size section enabled the practicality wish list to be ticked off.
From the street it looks like an ornate Victorian Villa, but once you step inside it acts like Mary Poppin’s handbag as more and more rooms and surprises appear.
There aren’t too many homes on 500m2 of inner city land that accommodate four bedrooms, five bathrooms, two living zones and a study. Kitchen and separate dining room with internal courtyard, six car garage, cinema room and cellar with a connecting lift.
But wait there’s more – the rear of the section includes a separate studio apartment, meticulously landscaped garden and a Mediterranean inspired alfresco pool and spa.
This modern luxury family home ticks all the boxes for both parents and children, producing multiple zones for privacy, intimacy and entertainment as individuals or as a family. Parents if you’re wanting to keep those teenage children coming home after high school, this is how you do it!
Method behind the masterpiece
What was your inspiration?
They wanted to create a dwelling in the dense urban setting that could accommodate a fluid family occupation, to allow privacy and segregation for all members of the household.
The family has older children which drove the need for accommodating multiple vehicles, storage, entertainment areas and a large functional outdoor area and pool that were key components of the layout.
Overall, the design is respectful of the existing Victorian period home without being a mimic to the past. The homeowner wished to include a loft feel, with industrial details.
How does the door hardware fit into that?
The NIDO Verge lever style chosen was a perfect match for the look and feel of the home. It is elegant and contemporary with a nod to period. The homeowner appreciated the softer Graphite Nickel grey tones that provided a timeless finish with industrial accents through the diamond knurling.
What did you match the hardware to?
The Graphite Nickel finish and knurled details of the hardware complemented the tapware and towel rails perfectly and accentuated the industrial details the homeowner strived to include.
What is your favourite detail in the home?
The homeowner has a particular love for 1960s inspired design, décor and art which is seen throughout the home with use of curves, offset cluster pendants and furniture. The one piece that trumps all is the couch and armchairs situated in the main living room.
