The Vogue Café Sydney project is a collaboration between COOOP and Vogue to create a chic and sophisticated dining experience blending contemporary Australian cuisine with Vogue's high-fashion aesthetic. The styles merged through meticulous craftsmanship, utilizing elegant materials and innovative design solutions to reflect Vogue's luxurious brand and appeal to a discerning clientele.
Brief
Our brief was to design Vogue Café Sydney, which would be welcomed and suited for the Australian market, specifically Darling Harbour. This led the design to be warmer in tone with an anchoring pop of colour. This ensured the new restaurant's design and presence would be distinguishable from the brand's previous global restaurants while being suited for Australia. The brand wanted to keep an elegant, yet timeless feeling and design aesthetic where subtle detailing and the use of art and considered craftsmanship would be brought into the space. The space needed to have soft furnishings, and bespoke considerations and touches.
The intention was to create a unique, localized design that brought warmth and subtle tones, connecting with Sydney’s Darling Harbour clientele. Unlike previous Vogue Café designs, this project required a fresh perspective to resonate with both local and international markets, ensuring the space was both sophisticated and inviting while overcoming significant architectural constraints.
The design approach embraces the latest fashion trends but also brings in the return of classic traditional design elements, with a focus on biophilic design and the use of artisanal detailing and curated art. Incorporating natural elements and unique, considered accents, the space will create a sense of serenity and calm while also promoting luxury, sophistication, and elegance.
An interesting fact is that the tiles used on the bottom bar were custom cut and made to suit the floral pattern from the Vogue branding guide. The artwork of famous models and actresses was chosen by the Vogue Australia team, guided by Editorial Director and Publisher of News Prestige and Condé Nast titles Australia, Edwina McCann and her team.

Our studio specializes in design for behaviour.
We have done so for almost 30 years and in this time we have learned a tremendous amount about how people behave naturally and instinctively within these social environments. We have learned the hard way that in order to design successful venues, we needed to place predictive human behaviour at the heart of what we do. We capture succinctly how most people behave most of the time in order to design spaces for the most joy and ultimately the most success. This assists us in capturing the spirit of place.
