A Coastal Renovation That Needed to Work as Hard as It Looked
Malabar sits on Sydney’s southern coastline, one of those suburbs where the salt air is real, the light is intense, and the architectural brief for any renovation has to account for both. When the owners of this Malabar home undertook a full renovation, the facade needed a solution that could handle the coastal environment without compromising on finish quality or visual impact.
They came to Alumac for custom window shrouds, and what started as a shading requirement became a complete facade feature.
The Brief: Shade, Privacy and a Finish That Lasts
The project required two things working together. First, window shrouds to frame the windows, provide shade and add architectural definition to the renovated facade. Second, integrated privacy screening, custom slat partitions built into the shroud design, to provide privacy without closing off the interior from light and air.
The screens provide privacy for both external and internal lines of sight, with the backyard swimming pool featuring additional privacy screens.
For a coastal property, the finish choice was straightforward: Dulux White Satin powder coat. It’s a neutral, warm white that sits naturally in a coastal setting, reflects heat well, and holds its appearance against the UV exposure and salt air that come with an oceanside location.
The Solution: Trendline Window Shrouds with Custom Integrated Privacy Screens
Alumac’s Trendline window shroud range was the right fit for this project. Manufactured from 3mm aluminium with an outward face depth between 25mm and 50mm, Trendline offers the design flexibility needed for a renovation where each window opening had its own dimensions and requirements.
The defining feature of this installation was the custom slat partitions built into the shroud structure. Rather than treating the window shroud and privacy screen as two separate products, Alumac fabricated them as a single integrated unit, the vertical slat partitions sit within the shroud frame, creating a coherent architectural element that reads as one clean piece from the street.
This kind of integration is where custom fabrication earns its place. An off-the-shelf shroud and a separately sourced screen would never sit together the way a purpose-built combined unit does. The result here is a facade detail that looks considered and resolved, not assembled from separate parts.
The modular design of the Trendline system allowed panels to be manufactured to the exact length required for each opening. Stainless steel fixings are machine-pressed flush into the panels, becoming invisible once powder coated, so there are no exposed fasteners, no visible dome nuts on the front face. Just a clean white profile against a white facade.
Why White Satin Works for Coastal Architecture
White Satin is a Premium Dulux / Colorbond-range colour, a warm, slightly creamy white that differs from a stark clean white in subtle but important ways. In a coastal setting, it reads softer in strong sunlight, which suits the relaxed character of a beachside suburb like Malabar.
Practically, it’s also a smart choice for sun mitigation. Lighter colours reflect heat rather than absorbing it, which supports the passive solar performance that window shrouds are designed to provide. On a north or west-facing elevation in Sydney, that thermal performance matters.
All Alumac powder coating is applied in-house using a chrome-free immersion pre-treatment system, which maximises adhesion and corrosion resistance, essential for a product that will spend its life exposed to salt air on Sydney’s coast.
Built for the Coast, Backed by a 10-Year Warranty
Aluminium is the right material for coastal environments. It doesn’t rust, it doesn’t swell or warp with moisture, and a quality powder coat finish maintains its appearance for years without repainting. For homeowners in Malabar, Maroubra, Coogee, or anywhere along Sydney’s coastline, that low maintenance performance is a genuine long-term advantage.
Every Alumac Trendline window shroud is engineer certified for non-cyclonic environments and protected by Australian Design Registration. This installation, like all Alumac window shrouds, is backed by a 10-year warranty.
The Finished Result
The completed facade is cohesive, coastal, and quietly considered. The Trendline shrouds with integrated slat screens give the renovation a layered depth that a flat facade simply can’t achieve. The White Satin finish ties the whole elevation together, the shrouds don’t stand apart from the building, they belong to it.
It’s a good example of what a custom-fabricated window shroud can do when it’s designed for a specific project rather than adapted from a standard product.
