Located on the water’s edge in Worser Bay, this project not only has stunning views but provides a venue at the heart of the local community. The brief called for new clubrooms for the Worser Bay Boating Club who have operated in the area for nearly a century. The building was to respect its heritage and support sailing in the community and beyond.

With Simon Novak and Richard Middleton’s shared love of sailing, the architectural style is inspired by a modern, nautical boatshed aesthetic. From the double gable roof forms to the painted board and batten cladding, the boatshed vernacular is clear.

The coastal location called for robust, low maintenance materials that are appropriate to a severe marine environment. A less obvious aspect of the project is the incorporation of second-hand materials from LT McGuinness and Willis Bond projects with various subcontractors donating materials as well.

Internal spaces are flooded with natural light and breath-taking harbour views. The internal aesthetic is smart and functional with exposed timber elements reflecting the nautical theme. These spaces are designed to be flexible and can accommodate large meetings and catered functions.

What exists now is a venue at the heart of a community, for a community. One that not only looks smart but also has an enduring sense of history
