11 bathroom vanity lighting ideas for 2024

Let's be real. The most common reason we have a vanity is for good lighting for grooming. It's little wonder that the classic configuration of mounted light bulbs ringing the sides of the mirror has stayed so consistent for so long.

Perimeter lighting can be adapted to fit your own design aesthetics, as well. You could use old-timey Edison bulbs to give a turn-of-the-century vintage thrill. Or you could adopt LED strips or light fixtures with colour-changing bulbs if you're looking for something more adventurous.

You know what they say, all things old become new again. Considering their iconic style and elegance, it's little surprise that Mid-Century Vanities have been coming back in vogue in recent years. With feature lightbulbs providing a glamorous glow and focal point, you’ll have a showstopping option that will dazzle one and all.

If you’re looking to embrace your inner Marilyn Monroe, this combination is sure to work a treat.

If something a little less showy is more to your tastes, having one light source on either side of the mirror will give most of the same benefits while not appearing as busy or cluttered.

As with classic perimeter lighting, you can modify this lighting trend to fit your taste as well. You could use antique Victorian light fixtures to give a timeless, elegant feel to your bathroom decor. Or you could mount the latest lighting fixtures, mirrors, and magnifiers for more practical bathroom tasks.

Lighting ideas aren’t all about the fixtures you have. Doubling up on bathroom mirrors is a great way to bounce the light sources that you have within a space. The main mirror in front is a given but including a pivot mirror or a freestanding/counter mirror on your vanity or next to it will add another dimension of light to brighten your space. It’s a quick and easy way to give your bathroom lighting a boost which may be all that’s needed.

Rustic design trends have been in for the past few years. It's an easy way to add a dash of warmth and earthiness, even when you're living in the heart of a busy downtown area.

If you're looking to incorporate some charm into your interior design, find an antique or hand-made wooden mirror as your centrepiece with old-fashioned light bulbs in a wall sconce. This will give an antique feel to the space and provide helpful task lighting for applying makeup and grooming.

Adding some polished metal light fixtures to your bathroom vanity lights is an easy way to modernise your bathroom decor. What makes this better is that there is a range of different finishes to choose from including chrome, nickel brass and more meaning you’ll have options for multiple aesthetics.

You can even augment them with designer pendant lights to give a slightly classier take on modern minimalist lighting.

If we take a lesson from Hollywood, it's that we often need light from more than one direction. Having one-directional lighting gives a deep black Film Noir feel that is not conducive to getting ready in the morning.

Track lighting, straight or curved, will give you an array of light sources which you can move and adjust independently from one another, as and where you need them. It gives you great flexibility and full coverage in a space where it's extremely helpful.

There truly is a light fixture for everything. You don't have to have enormous, ornate light fixtures if you want good light for your vanity.

This could be reflected in the style of lighting, its ornateness, the amount and quality of lighting or even working with lighting professionals to help with its overall design. Whatever the investment is, more often than not, you’ll find it worth the expense.

While it's fun to daydream about abstract shapes and luxurious makeovers, sometimes it's nice to just focus on what works. Things are classic for a reason, after all.

This bathroom vanity aesthetic has more to do with the trappings. Imagine, a modern wrought iron wall sconce emerging from a timeless subway tile pattern. Perhaps the cabinetry might be made of teak or some other dark wood.
