What are Track Lights? 

Track lighting is a specialised system that offers design versatility. It's a continuous track device, attached to a wall or a ceiling at one point, and connected to a range of fixtures through electrical conductors. In New Zealand, these fixtures are known as "heads" and can be mounted anywhere along the length of the track. That allows the bulbs to spread lengthwise down beams, across horizontal elements or hanging with rods from places like vaulted ceilings.

Track Lighting Components

Track light systems in New Zealand have two main parts. One is the track that connects to the power source and holds the conductors for the heads. The track is mounted as a ceiling light or fixed to a wall, packed with adjustable heads. 

Track Lighting Heads

Heads are the flexible part of the system, the lamp-holding fixtures. Typical recessed track lighting heads contain a reflector flood light bulb inside a small metal barrel. Another, more modern track lighting variation in New Zealand comes with pendant fixtures in different colours and shapes. These can hold one or more light bulbs inside an open shade.

The number of heads on a single track depends on the maximum number of watts supported by the system. 

Lighting Tracks

The essential part of the lighting system mounts to the ceiling or wall and powers the heads. A copper strip extending on the inside conducts electricity, allowing the lamps to be positioned anywhere along the track length. Tracks are available in a plethora of shapes and finishes in New Zealand suitable for a variety of spaces. 

Track Lighting Bulbs

Track lighting typically uses reflector or dichroic bulbs, depending on the type of head(s) featured in the system. Pendant heads offer slightly more versatility with their bare-bulb design; the most popular choice in New Zealand being the attractive Edison or Carbon filament bulbs.

Types of Track Lights

Linear Track Lights

Linear track lights provide accent/task lighting, suitable for both commercial and residential settings. The standard length is up to 2.5m, with components that allow the extension to a second line of the track.

Suspended Track Lights

Suspended track lighting models can be more customised in New Zealand, curved and cut to size to fit specific areas that need highlighting. These systems come with either mini-pendants or adjustable track heads, available as hard wiring or plug-in lighting.

Monorail & flexible track lights

Monorail track lights offer flexible and customisable lighting options, ideal for highlighting features and creating dynamic effects. 

Track lights offer a plethora of options with various colors, materials, and finishes, such as brass or metal lights, or white and black track lights. This range provides an abundance of options to select the ideal lighting that will best complement the interior design of any space.

Type of Bulbs

LED Track Lights

LED bulbs are the most energy-efficient lighting option in New Zealand that uses electrical current to illuminate the tiny diodes. The heat produced in the process is absorbed into a heat sink, preventing heat buildup. LED bulbs contain no mercury and can last more than 20 years.

Halogen Track Lights 

Halogen bulbs use a heated fibre, similar to incandescent bulbs but more energy-efficient. These bulbs also contain no mercury and typically last up to one year.

Track Lighting Size

They are available in several specific lengths in New Zealand. Through a range of connectors, track sections can be joined and customised to form a straight line, L-shape, or T-shape. Lighting heads can be large, small, or mini.
