During construction, bushfires advanced to within a few hundred meters of the site and were turned back by fire crews and locals working the surrounding country. That episode reframes the entire material logic of the house. Board-formed concrete, corrugated steel, and hardwood cladding present as an aesthetic position, but in a landscape rated for ember attack they are first a calculation about what survives a summer.
Four decades of Australian rural architecture have run under the influence of Glenn Murcutt’s instruction to touch this earth lightly, a discipline of elevated floors and slender steel frames hovering above the ground plane. Jak Architecture inverts it. The northern edge of the house is driven into the rock face, the building nestled down into the hillside rather than lifted clear of it. Mass, thermal and literal, does the work that lightness cannot. Two forms arrange in an L around a courtyard and sheltered timber deck beneath a single corrugated gable, a profile borrowed wholesale from the shearing shed and the farm outbuilding, stripped of nostalgia and held at the scale of a house.
The concrete end walls carry the primary gesture on approach, poured against oregon formwork set vertically so the grain of the boards transfers into the surface. Vertical timber cladding on the adjacent volume runs in the same direction, which means the two materials share a rhythm even as they diverge completely in weight and finish. Blackbutt boards treated with a smokey gray tone arrive pre-weathered, an acceptance that eucalypt hardwood will silver regardless and a decision to control the endpoint rather than resist it.
Orientation splits the plan into two climates. North, the pool and entertaining terrace sit in a sun-trapped enclosure with the rising rock face behind them acting as windbreak and radiator. South, full-height sliding glazing dissolves the wall entirely, framing the Cathedral Ranges and pulling cross ventilation through the living areas as the land falls away toward the valley. Bedrooms turn west into close eucalypt bushland, trading the panorama for intimacy. A circular window punctuates the concrete, and in the master ensuite it reappears behind reeded glass in the shower, the ranges broken into vertical striations and softened into something closer to an impression than a view.
