In this series, we share the style cues homeowners can take from some of Australia’s most beautiful shops, hotels, bars and restaurants. Get ready to be inspired!

Located in Norwood, South Australia, Arkhe is a restaurant and bar with an interior design scheme by Studio Gram that creatively responds to the ritual of cooking over an open fire through rich materiality and careful composition. Moody hues of charcoal grey form the foundation of the palette, with touches of burgundy, amber and yellow acting as accents reminiscent of flame. Shou sugi ban hand-charred timber, leather and stone establish a masculine energy within the space, while rendered plaster walls represent the texture of ashes.

Naturally, the open wood-fire oven and grill takes centre stage within the floorplan, the audible crackle of flames and light scent of wood smoke ensuring diners enjoy a sensorial experience. The furniture has been curated to reflect a minimalist aesthetic with a strong focus on natural materials. Simple yet refined square, streamlined shapes characterise the selection, with rounded tables and decorative elements added to soften the scheme. The overall effect is beautiful and elegant, while authentically representing the culinary delights on offer.

Enrich a monochrome scheme with texture

Alleviate a flat and boring monochromatic scheme by creating depth and contrast with materiality. Studio Gram have purposefully placed charred timber seating against a rendered wall, topped it with smooth leather upholstery and elevated the composition with stone-topped steel tables. The amber glass lighting supplies a pop of colour and change of texture.

Repeat shapes for visual cohesion

Ensure your room feels professionally curated and visually harmonious by repeating shapes throughout space. At Arkhe, the shape of the circular windows is repeated in the round tables and stools, round pendant lights and arched doorways. Do this at home by complementing arched or rounded architecture with furniture, lighting and soft furnishings of a similar shape.

Energise a dark environment with pops of colour

The monochromatic palette of Arkhe’s interiors has been energised by the yellow artwork, amber lighting and indoor plants. Although small, each pop of colour is a powerful moment that draws the eye and adds interest to the overall look of the space. Recreate this effect at home with strategically placed artworks, sculptures and indoor plants.
