Raukawa Heights offers a solution to community-centric, natural design. Its fusion of modern architecture and timber accents creates harmony between the urban sprawl and natural surroundings.
One of Raukawa Heights' standout features is its integration of natural materials in its design, such as the extensive use of MacDirect's macrocarpa timber on the exterior façade.
“There is a renewed interest in using natural timber for building and construction purposes,” says Scott Kelso, General Manager of MacDirect.
“We are finding consumers have an increased awareness of the benefits of using a natural timber product in their homes. We are seeing more and more new builds in New Zealand requesting the use of untreated, graded timber, with some bespoke architectural homes being built almost entirely of naturally durable and chemical-free timbers.”
MacDirect is one of the largest wholesalers of plantation grown macrocarpa/cypress timbers. This local South Auckland-based sawmill comprises timber professionals with a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the industry. Passionate about Macrocarpa and dedicated to advocating for natural materials in the building industry, MacDirect’s hands-on approach ensures that every piece of timber is of the highest quality before it leaves its sawmill. As a result, they have become the foremost experts on Macrocarpa in the industry and continue to set the standard for others to follow.
The Raukawa Heights project, designed by Solari Architects, was to create a multi-dwelling that can coexist with the surrounding natural environment. Rather than imposing upon the natural landscape, the project embraces it, perhaps even enhancing the lush backdrop. Each of the 33 architecturally designed 3-bedroom townhouses has been meticulously positioned to harness sunlight, ensuring efficient energy use and a warm, inviting ambience for residents.
The environmentally conscious choice of adding Macrocarpa cladding to Raukawa Heights adds aesthetic appeal and serves a functional purpose. The timber's warmth and texture soften the dwellings' density, creating a serene living environment that effortlessly blends with the surrounding greenery.
“We are advocates for natural timber use and work alongside homeowners and industry professionals to offer these products. It's a niche, but it’s important to provide options for New Zealanders building homes for the future,” says Kelso.
“Plantation grown Macrocarpa/Cypress is a high-grade class 3 softwood and is a locally sourced in New Zealand,” explains Kelso, “It is commonly used for beams and trusses, weatherboard cladding, flooring and framing timber – you can build most of a house with Macrocarpa timber.”
The townhouses at Raukawa Heights are not just buildings but perhaps the future of architectural multi-dwellings. Elevated and terraced, they offer breathtaking views of the valley, inviting residents to connect with the natural beauty surrounding them. Every detail, from the chapel ceilings to the indoor/outdoor flow, has been meticulously crafted to enhance the residents' living experience.
Each townhouse offers unique layouts and features catering to diverse preferences and lifestyles. Whether it's the high-stud garages of Block D or the entertainers' hub of Block I, every home at Raukawa Heights is designed to be a sanctuary—a place where residents can unwind and recharge amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life.
Beyond its architectural splendor, Raukawa Heights prioritises quality and longevity. Each home is built to the highest standards, using proven materials and techniques. With a one-year defects period and statutory protections under the Building Act for 10 years, residents can rest assured knowing that their home is secure for the long term.
Despite its tranquil setting, Raukawa Heights offers easy access to local amenities, shops, and public transport, ensuring that residents enjoy the best of both worlds: the serenity of nature and the convenience of modern urban living. Nearby attractions such as the Horoeka Scenic Reserve provide ample opportunities for outdoor recreation, further enriching the community experience.
Raukawa Heights represents a shift in urban development—a model where nature and architecture join to create spaces that are not only beautiful but also sustainable and nurturing.
MacDirect’s commitment to quality and dedication to advocating for affordable and untreated timber in our homes sets a new standard for modern living, where residents can thrive amidst nature with the convenience of urbanity.
