For many New Zealanders, building a home by the sea is the ultimate goal. However, coastal environments can be tough on exterior materials, with salt air and changing weather taking their toll. One material that continues to perform exceptionally well in these conditions is Oamaru Stone, known for its durability and long lifespan.
A legacy of durability on the Oamaru Waterfront
A visit to the historic waterfront in Oamaru offers clear evidence of how well this material stands up to coastal conditions. The iconic Victorian buildings, constructed in the 1870s, have endured more than 150 years by the sea. Aside from a natural soft greying over time, the stone remains strong, weather-resistant, and structurally sound.
When compared with materials like timber or metal, the difference is significant. In coastal environments, Oamaru Stone consistently outperforms alternatives, lasting for generations.
Why Oamaru Stone works so well near the coast
The strength of Oamaru Stone lies in its composition. Made primarily of dense calcium carbonate, it is easy to shape when first quarried but gradually hardens once exposed to air. Over time, it develops a natural protective layer that enhances its resistance to moisture and weathering.
Its density and thermal mass also provide practical advantages. The stone absorbs very little moisture, reducing the risk of damage from freeze-thaw cycles. It also offers excellent natural insulation, helping buildings cope with fluctuating temperatures. In regions like coastal Canterbury, where conditions can shift quickly from hot to cool, this makes a noticeable difference.
Maintaining the look of Oamaru Stone
As Oamaru Stone ages, it naturally develops a softer grey tone, which many people appreciate for its character. This change does not affect its performance. For those who prefer to keep its original bright white appearance, applying a protective sealant every six to eight years is recommended.
Design flexibility with Oamaru Stone cladding
One of the benefits of Oamaru Stone is its workability during the early stages. This allows for a wide variety of finishes, textures, and design styles to suit different architectural preferences. It is available in two colour options, giving flexibility for both new builds and renovations.
