This Little Manly renovation embraces 1970s style with a modern twist, and provides a perfectly warm and spacious family home.
The home is clad with cedar shiplap by Hermpac and the roofing is Trimrib in Ironsand by Roofing Industries. Homeowner and builder Tony Buchanan installed the roof himself with his crew - some of the runs were up to 12m long.
The entrance is one area where Tony recruited a professional: friend Jeremy Stratton of The Lawn Laying Company did the landscaping. “We thought it came up beautifully,” says Tony.
Tony designed and built the stairs himself and it was deceptively simple. Concrete-look wallpaper in the entrance continues the home’s textural theme.
Installing the herringbone flooring was very time-consuming. Gloss tiles were taken full height in the kitchen for impact.
Black and white throughout the house makes a bold statement. “The white looks clean and simple then the contrast lets a feature be a feature.”
The ceiling in the master bedroom was an existing feature. “In the 70s and 80s, they lined the ceilings rather than having a crawl space then, of course, they needed something to tie the walls together. So there are often exposed beams or collar ties.”
The deck off the master bedroom. Tony and Katie closed in what was previously a metal handrail, extended the roofline overhead and added the hanging chair. “It’s a simple, private getaway spot,” says Tony.
The master bath is the room Tony is most proud of, with an easy flow to wardrobe and bedroom without the need for a door. “It’s probably one of the best bathrooms I've seen in a long time. We didn't finalise the design until the last minute.”
Exterior lighting was planned to highlight the home’s cedar cladding.
