A huge hello and welcome to all our latest fans and followers! Birdblack Design is stoked to have you on the creative journey with us, as we navigate all things beautiful.

As designers, we are very aware of trends: seasonal colours, innovative technology and being up-to-date with the latest natural and man-made materials. We pore over catalogues and sample libraries with an aim to stay ahead of the trends; bringing design fashion to our clients’ homes and workplaces. However, what we love MOST is creating bold statements in our designs that will not only grow with our families and businesses, but stand the test of time against the very “here and now” trends. We know from experience that perhaps some of the more popular design styles, often lapped up in magazines and on social media, are relatively “safe”, with plenty of neutral colours and well-utilised materials.

Classic and Traditional homes are STUNNING in all their white finery. Hamptons Glam is another design style enviable by most – those rich blues and multi-layered components; just gorgeous. Modern Industrial has been HUGE since it took off in New York, with Sydney and Melbourne absolutely jumping on that design train. Contemporary (as it suggests), moves with the times, and so we see the fusion of Modern Industrial and Traditional Glam coming through in the current Contemporary realm.

Birdblack Design LOVES designing in these styles, but today, we’re going to take you in a different direction and show you the REAL reason to hire Interior Designers and make your home or workspace an absolute showstopper! First off, let’s show off a Spanish Villa infusion with stunning elements such as terracotta cladding, natural marble and warm leathers. We present ‘Cato Residence’.

Our clients have a growing family and adore entertaining, so creating spaces that were functional for entertaining was imperative.

In order to create this bespoke home, we utilised a variety of colours, materials and textures which ooze luxury and impeccable taste. From brass to mosaic tiles to natural marble; from natural leather to plush rugs and a warm fireplace, this home is simply divine.

Due to the pre-existing warm auburn tones of the Spotted Gum timber flooring and terracotta roofing tiles, we continued this terracotta colour theme within the new renovation. Paired with gorgeous black and white elements, the sporadic touches of terracotta and brass not only warmed up the interior, but brought continuity and harmony throughout.

A note from ‘Cato Residence’ owners:
Working with Sarah and her team was easy. All questions and concerns were always responded to quickly. We love our new space, especially the built to measure carpentry pieces with lots of storage which was an important part of our brief. Seeing it finished, it all flows and fits well together. The team did a fabulous job design-wise and the workmanship is great.

Maybe you’re really vibing the Spanish flavour, but the time period isn’t quite right? Can we interest you in a Mid-Century Spanish Mission style, perhaps?!
‘Hicks Residence’ is a gorgeous Spanish Mission style home exuding much character and charm. The brief was to create maximised functionality and provide a truly ornate and elegant aesthetic.

Our clients placed no parameters on our design, allowing Birdblack Design to create a stunning bathroom aesthetic similar to a 5 star hotel suite. Interior Design: Birdblack Design Joinery: Marlix Bespoke Furniture & Joinery Build: Souter Built

Moving into the Kitchen…

The bold and dramatic tones and colours capture your attention immediately. Utilising a metal finish as a backdrop; the flecks within the metal dance in the light. Undoubtedly the main feature, the Alpha Verdi green marble benchtops and splashbacks take the spotlight. The black accents in the black sink, the handles and the Zetr power points are striking and perfectly offset all the brass.

Our clients’ fascination with Mid-Century design is evident in their collection of designer furniture pieces. Birdblack Design custom-designed a walnut timber bookcase which frames the room. This bookcase archway acts as both a library and a display unit for their exquisite and characteristic pieces.

A word from ‘Hicks Residence’ owners:
Sarah is a highly professional, talented designer who delivered a magical bathroom, kitchen and overall home for us and we would highly recommend her to anyone who wants exceptional quality in both her technical and personal skills.

Perhaps Spanish isn’t quite your taste? How about a Moroccan-Coastal fusion?

Our clients love travelling; Morocco being a favourite of theirs. Morocco is famous for bold colours and pattern. The result was a perfect blend of a Moroccan / Coastal fusion with the gorgeous feature colour: teal!

The spectacularly bold teal v-groove cabinetry is a focal point of the Kitchen, as are the hand-blown glass pendants clustered above the Dining Table.

These sculptural pendants are an artistic addition, formalising the Dining Area.

Pops of the striking teal are featured throughout on numerous occasions, partnered with whites and solid Blackbutt timber.

Our finishes and fixtures were selected to complement the Moroccan basin. We sourced all the tapware and accessories in a custom living rustic bronze finish which reflects a vintage touch. This works in harmony with the Corian Basil benchtop and the white joinery finish which receives pops of colour through the use of ceramic hand-painted Moroccan cabinet knobs.

It may be that you are more a Rainforest / Greenery lover rather than a coastal enthusiast. Let us introduce you to our Jungle Home!

Located in the picturesque coastal town of Kiama, NSW, our clients LOVE bright colours and retro furniture.

Given the 70’s coastal brick home, Birdblack Design wanted to keep a very classic look about the home, accenting it with existing furniture and some additional bold statement pieces, creating cohesion throughout the newly renovated rooms.

New grey iron bark timber floors were installed and we opted for a shaker profile to the kitchen joinery in a gorgeous satin white finish. The benchtops are Smartstone Amara which provides a beautifully soft marble look. On to our favourite room: the Bathroom!

You may be surprised to discover the jungle inspired print are in fact tiles, and not at all wallpaper! These tiles set the theme for the colour green to be featured throughout the home. You will find these tiles in the kitchen as well, featuring as the splashback. The floor in the bathroom grounds the space with a stunning chocolate parquetry pattern: a porcelain tile perfectly suited for wet areas.

A word from ‘Taylor Residence’ owners:
After we had purchased an extremely tired older home with good bones I became overwhelmed with the renovation task ahead. That was when I contacted Sarah. She quickly responded, meeting with us to talk through our options. I have to say how impressed we were with Sarah’s ability to listen to our needs and interpret them in a way that we hadn’t thought about but loved. We had absolute confidence in Sarah – she is highly creative, organised and able to drive projects through to completion while keeping everyone working together well. Sarah never lost sight of the final product while ensuring the project progressed and the quality of the finished product was second to none. I highly recommend Sarah and Birdblack Design to anyone thinking of renovating or planning their next build.

We hope you have thoroughly enjoyed our excursion of bright colours and bold prints! Whilst we do still love crisp white homes, there’s nothing like a WOW factor that will leave your guests gushing as they stop dead in their tracks to breathe it all in.
