Specifying Heated Towel Rails: What Architects and Designers Need to Know

Beyond Comfort: The Functional Case for Heated Towel Rails

The phrase "heated towel rail" conjures images of warm, fluffy towels—a spa-like indulgence. While that's certainly part of the appeal, the primary function is more practical: drying towels between uses.

A damp towel left in a humid Australian bathroom becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and mould. That musty smell clients complain about? It's not poor ventilation alone—it's towels that never fully dry. Heated towel rails can reduce bacterial buildup by up to 90%, keeping towels hygienic and fresher for longer between washes.

For architects and designers, this translates to a specification that:

• Ads everyday comfort a detail that enhances both function and experience
• Improves hygiene outcomes in commercial and hospitality settings
• Extends the interval between towel laundering, reducing operational costs for hotels and serviced apartments

Dry Element Technology: Engineering That Matters

Not all heated towel rails perform equally. The heating technology inside determines everything from warm-up time to surface temperature to ease of installation.

We developed Dry Element Technology (DET) which is standard for all our heated towel rails. Unlike older fluid-filled rails that can take up to 90 minutes to reach operating temperature, our DET rails reach optimal heat within 10 to 15 minutes. Surface temperatures remain safe to touch on exposed bars while concentrating heat where it matters—under the towel. Other benefits include:

• Lower energy consumption
• Built in PTSelect - temperature adjustment switch
• No welding needed, all laser cut and neat
• Ease of installation - not too heavy, and can be installed upside down
• Fully serviceable if needed

Specification Considerations for Design Professionals

Electrical Requirements and Installation Flexibility

All Bathroom Butler heated towel rails feature dual entry electrical connection, allowing you to specify the power point on either the bottom left or bottom right (or inverted for top connection). This flexibility simplifies coordination with electrical plans and accommodates existing rough-in locations during renovations.

Units can be installed hardwired, or it has the option to be plugged in. Free standing and floor mounted options are also available.

IPX5 Rating for Zone 1 Installation

Every Bathroom Butler heated towel rail carries an IPX5 rating. This rating permits installation in Zone 1—the area directly above a bath or next to a shower where many competing products cannot be specified. For bathroom layouts where the ideal rail position falls within splash zones, this opens design possibilities that would otherwise require compromises, product substitutions or allowance for transformers.

For new builds, we recommend coordinating power point placement early in the electrical design phase to maximise placement options.

Energy Efficiency

Energy consumption ranges from 40 to 180 watts depending on rail size—equivalent to one or two conventional light bulbs. For projects targeting sustainability certifications or energy-efficient design, heated towel rails represent a minimal load with measurable hygiene and amenity benefits.

PTSelect Switch: Integrated Control Without Compromise

One of our key innovations is the PTSelect Switch, built into every Bathroom Butler heated towel rail. This integrated controller eliminates the need for external wall-mounted switches, keeping your bathroom design clean and uncluttered. (Isolator switch is still needed, but can be on the main electric board)

The PTSelect Switch delivers:

• On/off control on the rail itself—no reaching for wall switches or dealing with separate controllers
• Adjustable temperature output from 40% to 100% power, allowing clients to fine-tune heat levels seasonally or based on preference
• Up to 60% reduction in running costs when adjusted to lower settings during warmer months
• Discreet integration that maintains the rail's aesthetic without visible control boxes or wiring

Collections

We offer five distinct collections, available in different sizes and leading finishes.

• Natural - Classic Round bar design
• Cubic - Modern Square bar design
• Loft - Crossed Round bar design
• Contour - Mixed Round and Square design
• Edge - Round design, with a Towel Rack

All collections are available in multiple finishes:

• Polished Stainless Steel
• Brushed Stainless Steel/Nickel
• Matt Black
• Brushed Champagne Gold
• Brushed Graphite/Gunmetal

We only use Grade 304 stainless steel to manufacture Bathroom Butler products, chosen specifically for bathroom environments due to its corrosion resistance. No rusting, peeling, chipping, or staining—even in coastal Australian locations where salt air accelerates material degradation.

Sizing and Towel Capacity

Specifying the correct size depends on intended towel capacity and available wall space. Our range accommodates:

Towel Capacity

• 1–2 towels - Recommended for powder rooms, compact en-suites
• 3–4 towels - Recommended for standard bathrooms, guest suites
• 5–6 towels - Recommended for family bathrooms, hotel rooms, luxury en-suites

Widths range from 430mm for compact installations to 1100mm for larger feature applications. Rail heights vary by collection, up to 1200mm.

Commercial and Hospitality Applications

For multi-residential, hotel, and hospitality projects, heated towel rails offer operational advantages beyond the guest experience:

• Reduced linen costs Extends towel lifespan by reducing the need for frequent washing, helping maintain fabric quality for longer
• Improved room service with faster towel drying between uses, without need for towel replacement for the same guest
• Premium Positioning that differentiates the property, signals attention to detail, and elevates a bathroom – small touch with lasting impressions

We supply projects ranging from small renovations to boutique hotels & large-scale apartment developments, with trade pricing and project support available for design professionals.
