Testing and tagging electrical appliances is one useful way to check electrical equipment is safe.

The purpose of testing and tagging is to prevent electrical accidents and fires caused by faulty electrical equipment.

The process usually involves a series of tests, including visual inspections, earth continuity tests, insulation resistance tests, and functional tests, to determine whether your electrical equipment is safe and in good working condition.

It’s important for businesses and organizations to ensure the safety of your employees and customers as well as to comply with legal requirements and insurance policies.

However, it’s not mandatory. What is legally required is that equipment is electrically safe and maintained in a safe condition.

Testing and tagging doesn’t guarantee future electrical safety.

What it does is provide a snapshot of how safe the appliance is at the time of testing..

There’s four colours that are primarily used on a quarterly basis across New Zealand, which include red, green, blue and yellow.

Test and tag colours are used for particular industries to represent the different months of the year

There’s also other test and tag colours which can be used (orange, white, black, burgundy and grey), but they are not used as frequently.

Tagging a portable site office with a yearly test would be an example of where these other colours might be used.

Completing Testing and Tagging to AS/NZS 3760:2010 of electrical equipment will provide a snapshot and a record for the (PCBU) Person Conducting Business or Undertaking to provide accountability of a safe work place.
