In a recent interview with Ironbark Metal Design, a leading designer and manufacturer of bespoke fire pits, we delved into the intricacies of backyard fire pit design and gained valuable insights into creating the perfect outdoor oasis.
Ironbark Metal Design offers a range of distinctive designs for its fire pits, including bespoke pieces featuring Australian flora and landscapes. Co-Director and Artist Megan Waud draws inspiration from native plants and wildlife and incorporates them into intricate patterns that adorn Ironbark Metal's products. This connection with the local environment gives each piece a unique touch and enhances the overall ambience of the outdoor setting.
“Our artist Megan specialises in watercolour paintings and drawing with a subject preference towards Australian natives. We have lush natural surroundings here in Illawarra, and Megan draws her inspiration from bushwalking in the local rainforests, which is home to Australian natives and birdlife,” says Adam Cruickshank, Director of Ironbark Metal Design.
“The Australian native designs correspond well with our machinery when transferring the patterns that Megan draws, incorporating them into our designs for our pieces. They’re our most popular designs.”

When constructing a fire pit in Australia, durability is essential to enjoying the space for years. Ironbark Metal Design utilises weathering steel, also known as Corten, renowned for its longevity and ability to withstand harsh outdoor conditions. Unlike cheaper alternatives, these fire pits boast a thickness of three millimetres or more, ensuring longevity and structural integrity. Additionally, using Australian hardwood for lids and accessories adds a touch of natural beauty while enhancing year-round functionality.
To maintain the fire pit's beauty and functionality, taking proper care of it is crucial. Regular cleaning and ash removal prevent rust and ensure optimal performance. Ironbark Metal Design provides comprehensive care instructions to customers, emphasising the importance of keeping the fire pit dry and free of debris to extend its lifespan.
“The ash gets wet and holds water, causing oxidisation or rusting. It dramatically decreases the life of the fire pit if the ash is left in there for any length of time,” says Cruickshank.
“In the cooler months, you might only clean it once every few weeks. However, before you put it away for the summer, we suggest you clean it and put a cover on it or put it away. But most importantly, keep it clean, tight and free of ash, and you’ll get a much longer life from it,” Cruickshank adds.
While fire pits add warmth and ambience to outdoor spaces, safety should always be a top priority. Ironbark Metal Design encourages homeowners to familiarise themselves with local regulations regarding outdoor fires and to exercise caution when using their fire pits. By following guidelines and respecting neighbours, homeowners can enjoy their fire pits responsibly while minimising potential risks.
For those embarking on a DIY fire pit project, it's essential to avoid common mistakes that can compromise safety and aesthetics. Ironbark Metal Design advises against placing steel fire pits directly on tiles, which can lead to staining and damage. Instead, using sacrificial tiles, stone or elevating the fire pit with CFS sheeting can prevent potential issues and preserve the integrity of outdoor surfaces.
Modern fire pit designs go beyond mere functionality, offering versatility and aesthetic appeal. Ironbark Metal Design's artistic range includes sculptural fire pits, portable options, and multi-purpose designs seamlessly integrated into outdoor living spaces for year-round use.
From the elegant Freya sculptural fire pit and hardwood table tops to the practical barbecue attachments, Ironbark Metal Design looks to enhance the functionality of the fire pit, elevating the outdoor area through all seasons.
Integrating a fire pit into your outdoor living space requires thoughtful planning and design. Whether serving as a focal point or nestled discreetly in a corner, fire pits can enhance the overall aesthetics of your backyard. Complementing surrounding elements such as pools, outdoor kitchens, and entertainment areas allows homeowners to create a cohesive and inviting outdoor environment that encourages relaxation and socialising.
As the demand for outdoor living spaces grows, investing in a high-quality fire pit becomes essential for creating memorable moments with family and friends. With Ironbark Metal Design's unique designs, inspired by the beauty of the Australian landscape, homeowners can transform their outdoor spaces into havens of warmth and relaxation. From durable materials to innovative features, each fire pit offers an ideal blend of style and functionality, ensuring years of enjoyment for all who gather around its mesmerising flames.
