With more than 40 years of experience in bespoke floor coverings, the Designer Rugs team approaches each project, whether hand tufted or Axminster, with the same philosophy: the carpet should be conceived in close collaboration, developed with intention and realised with care.

What is Wall to Wall Carpet?

Installed as a single, continuous expanse from one wall to another, wall to wall carpet offers a seamless, uninterrupted finish free from visible joins. The effect is subtle yet transformative, lending a sense of calm cohesion that feels grounded and refined. Colour, pattern and proportion are considered in relation to the room itself, allowing the floor to become an integral part of the overall design language.

When commissioning wall to wall carpet, you are presented with a choice: hand tufted or Axminster. Each represents a different approach to the same ideal, a floor that is singular, considered and entirely resolved. The distinction lies not in quality, but in method, character and what best serves your interior.

Hand Tufted Wall to Wall Carpet

Hand tufted carpet is made by skilled artisans using a specialised tufting gun that inserts yarn into a backing fabric section by section. Because the process is highly bespoke, the design possibilities are virtually limitless.

A nuanced palette can range from restrained neutrals to expressive, complex tones. Patterns may be quiet and tonal or bold and large-scale. Texture plays an equally important role, with carving and shifts in pile height creating depth and dimension. These variations allow the carpet to reveal itself differently as light moves across the surface.Fibres are chosen with intention. New Zealand wool, silk, bamboo and textured yarns can be layered across cut, loop and shag piles, bringing variation in both look and feel.

Hand tufted wall to wall carpet tends to have a softer, plusher underfoot feel than woven alternatives. The pile can be deep and dense, contributing to both its acoustic performance and its sense of luxury.

When used throughout a residence, hand tufted wall to wall carpet introduces a warmth and softness that hard surfaces cannot replicate. It provides comfort underfoot, softens acoustics and creates a sense of continuity throughout the home, making it especially suited to interiors where comfort and aesthetic expression matter equally.

Axminster Wall to Wall Carpet

Axminster carpet is machine woven on a specialised loom, where yarn is woven directly into the backing fabric, with each fibre locked in place from the moment of creation. Refined over more than a century, this method produces carpets of exceptional consistency, durability and precision. The weaving process also enables intricate patterning with remarkable clarity. Axminster looms can produce highly detailed, multicoloured designs that retain their sharpness across large-scale installations. Geometric motifs, traditional patterns and complex custom compositions are reproduced with absolute consistency, making Axminster particularly suited to projects where design integrity is paramount.

The construction itself defines the carpet's character. A balanced composition of 80% wool and 20% nylon create a fibre blend engineered for longevity, natural soil resistance and acoustic richness, delivering performance without compromising on warmth or visual depth.

This inherent durability has long made Axminster a preferred choice for commercial and hospitality environments, particularly in hotels and restaurants where flooring must withstand heavy foot traffic while maintaining an elevated aesthetic. Yet its appeal extends well beyond these settings. From family homes where children and pets are part of everyday life, to sophisticated private residences and boutique hospitality projects, Axminster belongs wherever longevity, performance and the distinctive character of a woven carpet are valued.

The Designer Rugs Approach

With more than 40 years of experience in bespoke floor coverings, the Designer Rugs team approaches each project, whether hand tufted or Axminster, with the same philosophy: the carpet should be conceived in close collaboration, developed with intention and realised with care.

The process begins with conversation. We listen to how you envision your home, project or commercial environment. We seek to understand the room’s function, its light, its architecture, and how you, your family or your team move through it. We discuss performance requirements, aesthetic priorities, budget and timeline. From there, the choice between hand tufted and Axminster becomes clear.

Design development follows, with mood boards, colour samples and, where appropriate, hand tufted or Axminster carpet samples for review within your interior. This collaborative approach ensures the final result is precisely what you envisioned.

Production, sampling and installation are handled with the same attention to detail. Every stage is considered. Every seam, every colour and every fibre contribute to the final expression.

To begin, speak with the Designer Rugs team or arrange a complimentary design consultation. Together, we will determine which approach best suits your project and create a floor covering that feels considered, cohesive and entirely your own.
