Backed by decades of experience, this family-run Sydney bedding company has built a dedicated customer base through trust, transparency, and a focus on organic materials and local craftsmanship.

For over four decades, The Natural Bedding Company has been locally crafting bedding that’s good for us, and good for the environment – driven by their dedication to crafting quality products that are organic, ethical, and genuinely handmade in Australia.

Redefining luxury in the bedroom: Why Australians are switching to organic mattresses

‘Luxury’ can mean different things to different people. For some, it’s the aesthetic qualities of a design; for others, it can mean the use of high-end products. But for The Natural Bedding Company, it’s about more than that. It goes beyond appearances and the quality of production – it’s also about designing and crafting with intent to produce bedding and furniture with sustainability, authenticity, and their customers’ health as a top priority.

“Many people come to us because they’re looking for natural and healthy bedding products,” shares The Natural Bedding Company’s Carmen Buckley.

“People are becoming more and more aware of endocrine disruptors and the role that chemicals play in impacting our sleep. Some customers also have certain health issues such as chemical sensitivities, asthma or cancer, where they’re looking for a mattress that is going to be more supportive of their health.”

One of the newer designs in The Natural Bedding Company's collection, the Dreamer Mattress features five layers of varied density Organic Latex wrapped in natural wool that works to minimise partner disturbance and increase comfort. This intricate layering creates a luxurious feel, with customers often describing the Dreamer as feeling like a hotel-style mattress.

Rigorously researched and consciously designed

A lot of time and care goes into the design and development of The Natural Bedding Company’s product range, which includes bespoke mattresses, hardwood furniture, and luxury bedding, all made using only the finest natural and organic materials.

“For example, about eight years ago, we changed from natural latex to organic latex,” says Carmen. Although this may sound like a small change to consumers, it took many years of research to ensure the best material was being sourced.

“We’ve also switched the fabric that we use for our mattress covers to something that enhances both the quality and durability. Making sure products are truly organic isn’t easy, especially with all the greenwashing out there. Often, you’ll see a product marketed as natural, but the material has been fumigated, uses glues and adhesives that don’t carry certifications, or the certification only applies to the factory – not the actual product.”

Thankfully, The Natural Bedding Company is thorough in their research when sourcing materials, ensuring that any associated certifications are genuine and clearly reflect how the materials were produced. The company takes pride in its commitment to transparency, openly sharing these certifications to give customers confidence in the integrity and origin of every component used.

“We’re very particular and rigorous in our research and the quality of our products is a testament to this.”

Bedding and furniture handcrafted in Sydney and meticulously made-to-order

The Natural Bedding Company also maintains a close relationship with the people that grow, harvest, produce and manufacture their materials – from farm and factory visits, to regular and ongoing conversations with suppliers.

“We’re lucky to have close relationships with local cutters and sewers – one is only two doors down from us. It gives us far more control over quality and lets us support businesses in our community at the same time.”

Every organic mattress and sustainable timber bed base from The Natural Bedding Company is made-to-order in Sydney, ensuring every piece is crafted from fresh, non-toxic materials that support better sleep and long-term health.

“It also keeps us focused on the person who’s going to use that mattress or bed – it’s made specifically for them. It’s more of a conscious process than if we were manufacturing and just stocking it until someone buys it.

“We don’t just pull something off a shelf. It’s made by hand, by a team that really cares and puts a lot of effort into it.”

A common misconception about latex mattresses is that they're hot to sleep on. However, Carmen says this is usually because, in Australia, a product only needs to contain some latex to be labelled as a latex mattress. "The rest is usually made up of cheaper, synthetic fillers, and that's what makes it hot. Pure organic latex, like ours, is breathable and temperature neutral."
The Natural Bedding Company's furniture is crafted from natural timber, including the Baxter Timber Bedside Table. Handcrafted in the Sydney workshop from hand-selected, untreated Tasmanian Oak, which has been sustainably sourced from certified forests (AFS, PEFC, FSC), it's a simple, compact design that suits just about any interior style.

Sharing decades of knowledge to help customers sleep better

This attention to detail and care for their customers has been a foundation for The Natural Bedding Company for over 40 years. For the company, it’s about more than simply selling a product – it’s about empowering customers with knowledge, offering clear insight into how each product supports long-term health and wellbeing.

“Education is a big part of who we are, and I think a big part of why we’re trusted. People are able to call and talk to us and trust that what we’re saying is well-informed and well-researched. We’ve been doing this for decades,” says Carmen.

“What we offer is truly premium. Every detail is intentional, from sourcing the materials right through to the sewing and cutting of the fabric by the local businesses we work with. Every bed is hand-sanded and hand-finished. It really is a conscious and beautiful process. It isn’t about churning out products for the sake of selling – it’s about supporting our customers’ wellbeing.”
