A striking Baroque wooden statue of the Virgin Mary and child with the original polychrome finish c.1740 - 1780. The statue has been carved in the round by hand and would likely be a fruitwood. The Virgin is standing, draped in a fleur de lis emblem dress and a coat-veil falling in folds on the front and to the sides. The fleur de lis symbol signifies perfection, light, and life. Her long hair is partially upswept and a crown surmounts her head. Mary carries a naked baby Jesus, on her left arm. The polychrome colour is still wonderful and the statue has a beautiful patination and craquelure.
