COLORSTEEL® MAXAM™ is the Next Generation of COLORSTEEL®, featuring revolutionary and patented ACTIVATE™ technology. ACTIVATE™ Technology introduces to COLORSTEEL® an Aluminium Zinc Magnesium (AM) metallic coating. The presence of magnesium in the AM coating provides an additional barrier protection and significantly assists in slowing down corrosion of and extending the lifespan of COLORSTEEL®​.

Replacing both ENDURA® and MAXX®, one of the standout features of COLORSTEEL® MAXAM™ is its versatility. Whether your project is near the coast, inland, in a geothermal area, or in an industrial environment, COLORSTEEL® Maxam™ is designed to perform exceptionally well across all these conditions. This simplifies the selection process, ensuring you have a reliable, high-performance solution without the guesswork. We will continue to offer COLORSTEEL Altimate® for our Extremely Severe environments. The COLORSTEEL® MAXAM™ paint system will exceed the service life of most traditional post painted systems.

Features

COLORSTEEL® MAXAM™ pre-painted steel products are suitable for a wide range of roll-formed roof and wall claddings, rainwater accessories and general building products.

Key Features:

  • Incredibly resistant to corrosion.
  • A 3-layer organic coating consisting of an anti-corrosive and bonding pre-treatment layer, an anti-corrosive primer and a top coat, applied to both sides of the material
  • COLORSTEEL® paint technology provides exceptional resistance to chalking and fade
  • Genuine COLORSTEEL® MAXAM™ pre-painted steel products will always be branded.

Note: When designing your home, consider which profile is appropriate - each profile has a minimum pitch below which it should not be installed and certain profiles are only suitable for certain applications. Discuss your requirements with the designer or contact your local roll-former for further information.

Performance Attributes:

Appearance:

  • COLORSTEEL® MAXAM™ is available in various top coat colours. The standard backer is Perpetual Grey®, but is also available with a double-sided coating to suit customer’s needs.
  • Colour retention (CIE Lab units Delta E) is 8 units maximum after 10 years exposure, and 10 units maximum after 15 years exposure. Chalk rating (AS 1580:481.1.11:1998) is no more than 4 after 10 years exposure.
  • Solar reflectance and light reflectance values vary with colour, refer to COLORSTEEL® Light Reflectance brochure for details.

Fire Resistance:

  • COLORSTEEL® MAXAM™ is rated as a Group 1-S material and has an average specific extinction area of 56.0m²/kg, a peak heat release rate of 3.6 kW/m² and total heat released of 0.3 MJ/m² when tested in accordance with ISO 5660:2002 Part 1 and Part 2.

Standards:

  • Steel substrate may be either G300 or G550 consistent with AS 1397:2021
  • Metallic coating is consistent with AS 1397:2021
  • COLORSTEEL® Maxam™ is Product Type 6 consistent with AS/NZS 2728:2013
  • Tolerances are consistent with the requirements of AS/NZS 1365:1996
Guidelines for Use

COLORSTEEL® MAXAM™ is designed to be suitable for most of New Zealand environments, ranging from mild/inland through to very severe coastal. For more extremely severe coastal environments, COLORSTEEL Altimate® may be more suitable.

Your COLORSTEEL® supplier will be responsible for ensuring that COLORSTEEL® MAXAM™ is installed in accordance with the COLORSTEEL® Installation Guide.

COLORSTEEL® MAXAM™ should not be used in the following applications:

  • Embedded in concrete.
  • In contact with permanently wet materials
  • Water tanks
  • In contact with soil, bark or similar
  • As concrete formwork
  • In animal shelters

Copper or brass pipes must not be allowed to discharge onto COLORSTEEL® MAXAM™ or be allowed to come into contact with them.

Guidance on the use of other materials in proximity to COLORSTEEL® MAXAM™ is covered by the COLORSTEEL® Installation Guide. Mixing brands of pre-painted steel material on the same building is not recommended.

Soft zinc or aluminum flashings should be used. Marking with lead pencils is not advised, and sealing washers should be low carbon non conducting.

Before using COLORSTEEL® MAXAM™ near sources of heavy industrial pollution or in geothermal areas, contact New Zealand Steel's Customer Care team.

COLORSTEEL® products are proudly made by New Zealand Steel. We stand behind the performance of all COLORSTEEL® products, which is why they’re backed by extensive warranties of up to 50 years.

Your warranty is dependent on two things:

  • The location of your project and associated environmental category.
  • Ensuring you maintain it in line with the COLORSTEEL® maintenance recommendations.
