A charming late 18th century dessus-de-porte oil-on-canvas in good condition. These were painted to hang over doors in panelled rooms. The composition of two playful winged putti (cherubs) is set within a painted trompe-l’œil oval cartouche with classical relief motifs, giving the illusion of carved stone. The palette is soft and harmonious, with warm flesh tones, muted blues and earthy greys. The subject is typical of the neoclassical style and romantic sentiment of the late-1700s in France.
