Amongst the sofas and lounges suites, couches and armchairs are one of the most important pieces of furniture in any home. They’re a place to relax, to socialise and are often used more than many other items in the house.

How to choose the best sofas and armchairs

Aesthetics and comfort are at the top of the list when choosing the right sofa or couch, but practicalities must be considered too.

Consider the space

Considering the space is the best place to start. This will narrow the options in terms of shape and size. Typically, if the space is quite small, a small sofa is the best option, if the space is big, a large sofa can be a good option. For the shape, it can be an L-shaped sofa or a corner sofa, this will depend also on the space in your lounge or living room.

Usage of sofas and couches

The next thing to consider is usage. Depending if the couches are going to be used every day, whether there are kids and pets or if the space is used primarily for entertaining or relaxing.

This helps to define the types of sofa materials. In homes with pets or children, more durable fabrics such as linen, nylon or polyester may be the best choice. These are often stain-resistant and easily cleaned.

A leather sofa is a good option as it is durable and easy to clean. It gives a more sophisticated look to any space. Other materials such as rattan, and wood add character to any living space.

If the sofa is used mainly to relax, velvet couch or or plus suede.

Choosing the perfect armchair

Deciding on the perfect armchair will require consideration of space, comfort, aesthetics and practicality. Whether it is a recliner for the bedroom or living room, or a swivel for the office, choosing the right armchair will ensure it serves its purpose and stands the test of time.

As for the couches, the type and size of armchairs depends on where it is placed and how much space is there. Small armchairs are perfect for small spaces or when there is already some furniture in the room. Large armchairs can be used in any spacious room.

There are different types of armchairs that can compliment a space. Rattan armchairs or leather armchairs are comfortable and add a modern touch. Swivel armchairs are perfect for the living room but also for a small office space. 

Another seating solution is using bean bags. They are comfortable and do not take up much space.
