Not everyone in New Zealand enjoys moving back inside once the weather starts to turn cold. Deck heating helps to extend the transitional period even deep into winter, allowing a year-round utilisation of some spaces. Outdoor heaters are also convenient for typically unheated places like garages or workshops, making them comfortable to use regardless of the season.

Why Outdoor Heating

A ceiling or wall-mounted outdoor heaters are great all-rounders in New Zealand that provide warmth while staying out of the way. These models are usually powered by either electric infrared or natural gas.

Outdoor Heaters

Outdoor patio heaters are commonly made to be safe for children and pets. Patio heaters do not burn an open flame, and the base typically remains cool to the touch. Majority of units in New Zealand also feature a safety tilt valve with automated control.

A standing, propane-fuelled, dome-shaped feature is what most people consider an outdoor heater; however, it’s far from being an only option. These models radiate direct heat, providing an immediate warmth for the surrounding area. Most of them have wheels, and some come as tabletops.

Outdoor Fireplaces

Outdoor fireplaces are the best choice for homeowners in New Zealand who are looking for more than just heat. These installations provide warmth, but also enhance the ambience, creating an exceptionally cosy atmosphere and a striking focal point in the backyard.

Furthermore, outdoor fire can also be a place to cook. These convenient features are available in a variety of fuel types and styles. Fully enclosed outdoor fireplaces can be made of concrete, brick, or stone, built-in or standalone.

Outdoor Fire Pits

Outdoor Fire Pits are the kind of fireplaces that are open on all sides, offering a striking addition to pool decks, outdoor sitting areas, and patios. A built-in fire pit is a permanent structure, a hole in the ground, bordered with fire-resistant materials such as stone.

The other kind is a raised fire pit, made from metal or stone and elevated on supportive legs. A raised fire pit can be permanent or portable in New Zealand. Compared to traditional fire pits, gas-powered fire pits are easier to maintain, and some can even double as a table.

Outdoor Heating Power Type

Patio heating usually uses one of three different fuel types in New Zealand: electric, propane, and natural gas. Outdoor gas heating is, more or less, permanent solution, available in hanging, in-ground, or standing models. It’s the primary source of fire in outdoor fireplaces and fire pits, besides wood. A gas fireplace is quite easy to maintain, too.

Outdoor electric heating comes in a wide variety of options, including tabletop and portable devices, wall mount, hanging, standup, and ceiling installations. Infrared electric heaters use a lamp to convert electricity into infrared heat which is then transmitted by electromagnetic waves through the air. It’s the objects, rather than air, that absorb the electromagnetic waves. This process is similar to the heat of the Sun, just safer.

Things to Consider When Choosing Outdoor Heating in New Zealand

There is no one-size-fits-all solution with outdoor heaters. While most of them will effectively warm an outdoor area, each model comes with unique features and benefits.

Some installations in New Zealand are more cost-effective in terms of initial investment; others are affordable long-term due to fuel sources and accessories. A fire pit offers the most versatility of use and an array of stylish designs. Propane heaters offer portable and tabletop options, while hanging, ceiling or wall mount models can save valuable floor space. Natural gas outdoor heaters are the most permanent solution, available in standing, in-ground, and hanging versions.
