San Francisco-based Klopf Architecture specializes in warm, modern, and sustainable architecture and interior design, renowned for seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor living in both new custom homes and modernist home renovations.

John Klopf founded the firm in 2001 and has brought on a diverse and talented team of over 20 architects and designers in the interim. They excel at designing warm modern and mid-century modern-inspired residences that fit 21st-century lifestyles, with flowing, cohesive, light-filled, and functional spaces.

Approach

Designing Each Client’s Vision

Our clients can expect a custom design developed specifically for each project. When we say “your vision, our design” we mean our clients can expect Klopf Architecture to embrace their ideas and vision as we design their modern style homes, and can also expect to benefit from our design approach; we bring our modernist design expertise to the table with enthusiasm, and have the technical background to make our clients’ projects come to life.

Past clients have appreciated our sincere listening, our thorough and professional approach to our services, and our expertise at combining the client’s abstract ideas with our modern design knowledge to create unique and relevant solutions.

When clients love their buildings on many levels – perhaps more than they had anticipated – we count the project as a success.

Design Philosophy

Warm, Modern Design

At Klopf Architecture we immerse ourselves in modern design ranging from more minimal / gallery-style projects to warmer, more mid-century modern style projects and any shade of modernism in between. We love architecture with clean joints, alignments that make spaces feel “at rest,” and a strong sense of flow.

Many clients select us because they love the way we break down barriers between inside and out, blending spaces together to promote indoor / outdoor living. We bring the outside in! Our designs feature openness to nature, and use natural materials where appropriate. Where direct connection is not possible, we love to admit natural light to animate spaces.

How much of the outside world to allow into a building depends on many factors including our clients’ goals and lifestyles, site orientation, views, climate, and the surrounding neighborhood. We search for an appropriate level of exposure for each client’s project.

Eichler Homes and Mid-Century Modern Homes

Eichler and mid-century modern home owners who work with Klopf Architecture love the architecture, the openness, and the lifestyle that these houses embody. These owners usually need more space or an updated kitchen, not a new architectural style.

We look at these projects as a chance to “update the classics” by re-invigorating these homes to meet the needs of today’s families with 21st century lifestyles. As an aside, it has become a significant challenge to keep the Eichler aesthetic and still meet today’s strict energy codes, but we know how to do it.

Having prepared designs for 300+ Eichler and mid-century modern homes over the past 20+ years, we’re known for our respectful approach. We design major additions and remodels in a compatible style, or design new modernist homes to replace those houses too far gone to save. Compatible is the key word; we don’t stick to some pre-set palette or design, and we’re not historical preservationists.

As we do for our new modern home projects, we explore each individual case for each owner, design what is appropriate for each situation, and alter the house to meet the specific needs and wants of that owner.

Homes at The Sea Ranch

Living at The Sea Ranch evokes a sense of serenity, dwelling lightly on the landscape, contrasted by the buffeting winds, dense forest and the wide expanses of ocean views. Klopf Architecture’s designs embody the community’s rural lifestyle by respecting the landscape, warming the occupants, and providing shelter for comfort and safety.

Our new home designs consider surrounding landscape and climate first in designing intentional dwellings for homeowners seeking an organic and calming coastal lifestyle. Together we’ll explore the possibilities of indoor-outdoor spaces connecting naturally to the landscape, creating warm, inviting areas for family and friends to gather. We will design your custom home to integrate with the sky, ocean, and rocky outcroppings, grounding you with the terrain and landscape.

For those fortunate enough to have lived at The Sea Ranch for a while, we help homeowners update their dwellings to the 21st century, rethinking and redesigning them for today’s lifestyles and changing needs. Our approach is to creatively consider how to transform what may have frayed over time into something more comfortable and at rest, with modern finishes and materials, while remaining true to the original warm and organic aesthetics of The Sea Ranch.

Integrated Interior Design

Klopf Architecture has built a reputation for designing homes that reflect the essence of modernism, defined by clean lines, thoughtful details, and timeless aesthetics. By integrating interior design services with our architectural expertise, we offer distinctive and truly unique modern and mid-century modern-inspired designs through a fully integrated, seamless approach that unites the interior and exterior design under a single, cohesive vision.

Full interior design service is ideally suited for clients seeking homes that reflect both functional needs and personal style, where architectural and interior elements align from the earliest stages. Whether building a new residence or remodeling an existing space, we ensure every detail—lighting, furnishings, and curated materials—works together to create a home that is both practical and beautiful. Each project is approached holistically, with all details fully aligned before construction begins.

Our in-house interior design capabilities make the design journey simpler, more cohesive and fully integrated. Clients gain access to custom-tailored solutions that enhance daily living while emphasizing timeless design, sustainability, and the harmony between architecture and interiors while seamlessly connecting indoor and outdoor spaces.

Green Design

Net-Zero Energy, Passive House, and All-Electric Homes

Klopf Architecture designs modern indoor-outdoor homes with minimal and clean lines while meeting or surpassing strict energy-efficiency standards. We have designed modern style all-electric, net-zero-energy, and Passive house homes that are unexpectedly glassy and open to nature.

The all-electric Cupertino Net-Zero Energy house was completed in 2012, well before California started requiring all new homes to be net-zero energy, and long before some California municipalities began requiring all-electric homes.

We designed a new San Jose home to meet both Passive House standards and the client’s desire to live in a glassy California-style indoor-outdoor, modern residence. It will start construction this summer.

As California’s green building and energy-efficiency codes become more stringent Klopf Architecture embraces them. We are continually developing new methods of creating comfortable, energy efficient, indoor-outdoor, modern-style spaces that enhance our client’s lives. Our design have evolved to surpass these requirements where possible, where others may grudgingly meet the codes or sacrifice design along the way to meeting them.

While we are facile with the technicalities of green and energy-efficient building we remember our number one task is creating pleasing spaces people love to inhabit.

“John and his team brought unparalleled mid-century modern design experience to our Eichler remodel and helped bring our vision to life. The Klopf team was engaged with us every step of the way, provided valuable guidance at critical junctures of our project and helped us navigate our first project at this scale. When there were unexpected challenges that were either within or out of their control, they took ownership and worked to make things right with a high degree of professionalism and care. Klopf Architecture are true mid-century modern / Eichler experts and the finished product is a testament to their craft.”
