About us
Ritchy Builders specialises in constructing top quality architectural homes in Picton, the Marlborough Sounds and Blenheim.
Phil Richmond is the principal and has been crafting bespoke homes for over 20 years around Golden Bay and Marlborough.
With a tight crew of three qualified builders, we work efficiently and fast while taking huge pride in our workmanship. Three is a great team size - small enough to assure quality but big enough to get the job done within a reasonable time. We’re fussy and sweat the details - especially in the early stages of planning and construction. Getting the ‘bones’ spot on is key to a ‘last forever’ structure and top-shelf finish. We typically build up a relationship of mutual trust with our clients. This has resulted in some beautiful houses that meet the architect’s vision, we are super proud of, and that the owners love.

Fixed Price vs Contract Labour
We avoid fixed price quotes. They tend to disadvantage both the client and builder. With architectural work there are invariably unanticipated or not-obvious details that are difficult to cost upfront. Builders traditionally 'load' their quotes to cover their butt. So the build is more expensive than it should be. And the house gets built to the quoted price - typically corners are cut, not margins. We take immense pride in our workmanship and reckon it’s better to build to achieve the quality and specification you desire.
We charge an hourly rate for each qualified builder. Invoices are emailed to you fortnightly. All three of us are on the tools all day. Although Phil invariably spends some time on the phone dealing with sub-contractors and suppliers. And also in design meetings with architect and client.
