What’s the difference between bathroom fixtures and fittings?

In New Zealand, bathroom fixtures refer to all the permanently installed elements that cannot be moved easily. This includes your toilet, bathtub, shower and sinks. Other fixtures that are only temporarily attacked with screws and similar are considered fittings and include handrails, towel rails, mirrors, etc.

The fixtures you use depend entirely on your vision and the style you’re going for. Many prefer to use the same finishing on their fixtures as it can give a more polished look. However, many expert designers or creative individuals can achieve a similarly pleasing and more interesting look by mixing and matching your fixtures. For example, having both matte black and chrome fixtures can be pleasing to the eye.

What makes a designer bathroom?

In New Zealand, there are a number of elements that are often used to create a designer bathroom. These include installing a statement mirror, heated floors, wall-to-ceiling tiles combining solids and patterns, double sink vanity with luxurious countertops (marble, granite, quartz), a freestanding tub or shower and a shower niche. Adding a skylight would also be a bonus feature when creating a designer bathroom.
