Do I need consent to build a deck?

In New Zealand, you do not need consent to build a deck that is up to 1.5m high but will need consent for anything higher than that. However, the building code will require that you install a safety barrier or railing on any areas where there is a fall of 1m or more. You’ll also require consent if you plan on building a roof over your deck.

The size of your deck will depend largely on the space you have available. However, most experts in New Zealand recommend that you build a deck that’s no larger than 20% of the homes or buildings’ square footage. Although this is just a recommendation, it is important to remember as a deck larger than 20% does not overwhelm the rest of the property visually.

Most patios are constructed from durable materials, which means they don’t require frequent cleaning. However, to keep your patio looking great and lasting a long time, it’s recommended to give it a thorough cleaning at least four times a year, at the start or end of a season (especially winter and summer).
