Do you need a deck builder’s licence to build a deck?

If you hire a professional commercial decking builder, the contractor must have the required licensing before they can commence the project. It’s best to check and confirm that the deck contractors have the licences and it's up to date. Apart from the required licensing, the contractors must have the proper insurance before starting the project.

Should a deck have a slope?

Yes, a deck should have a slope. Building experts in New Zealand recommend having a sloped deck for efficient shading of water. During the building process, it should be designed with a 3mm per 300mm perpendicular slope. Regardless of the direction of the deck, the slope should be a minimum of 3mm per 300mm. However, if the contractor used a solid deck surface, the ideal slope orientation would be 6mm per 300mm. The 3mm-6mm slope range isn't noticeable even to the individual standing on it.

How often should a deck be replaced?

Wooden decks last between 15 to 40 years in New Zealand. Its lifespan is greatly determined by the quality of materials used and the care and maintenance routine the owner follows. Frequent deck inspection will help you determine whether your deck needs to be replaced or not. External damage, mould and rot in the wood are apparent signs that your deck needs to be replaced.
