The brief — Enhance the connection between old and new — and internal and external — by introducing an addition to this Federation home within strict heritage conservation guidelines in Sydney’s quiet Inner West. Original rooms would remain intact, with the crafting of new living spaces in the rear, as well as a pool that would still allow for a garden large enough for kids to play. A slight reconfiguration would also both rationalise circulation from the front and create internal access from an originally separated garage to the house. Simultaneously, a separation of living and lounging zones would provide enough space for the family of five to connect and be together or for the parents and children to have their own areas when appropriate.
The result — a reinterpretation of the characterful features of the home’s Federation frontage and a coalescence of living spaces with the exterior garden and pool through an internal level change — forging a warm domestic setting for family life. The carefully considered and curated vision is evident in all aspects of the project, from planning and architecture to the custom joinery, furniture and styling. The terrazzo thresholds and vitrified tiles to the fireplace spawned inspiration for a tactile and layered material sensibility. Red stack-bond brick forms a robust datum that grounds the open living spaces, complemented by the deliberate pairing of warm natural stone with Tasmanian oak and rattan joinery.
Thoughtful details pay homage to the identity and grain of the original house. The subtle transitions in flooring combine brick, terrazzo, parquetry and traditional timber boards, giving depth to the articulation of space. The custom joinery, including a broad banquette lounge in the living area, creates purpose and composure. Dual-toned curtains playfully align with the ornate sills of the original windows, and lighting provides scale and focus.
The feeling — A truly ‘forever home’ for its young family, with a sense of comfort and familiarity to nurture the lives and pursuits of all family members. The design celebrates the sheer delight of open space, natural light and connection to landscape. Coming into the space evokes that big-sigh, laid-back luxury of coming home.
