This beautiful new home in Canberra was lovingly designed by the client and their architect. We were thrilled to add the layer of interior design through furnishings, art and styling.
The clients have wonderful taste and wanted spaces that were warm and inviting, expressing their personality and style. In the home, we wanted to achieve a refined and curated look while creating inviting and comfortable spaces for their friends and family.
The heart of the home is the open plan kitchen, dining and living room which extends to the outdoor terrace and garden area.
The tones of the space draw in the colours from the Canberra autumnal landscape with pops of burnt oranges, soft yellows and turquoise. The living space is warm and inviting with soft shapes and forms in the sofa and armchairs, accentuated with warm hues and tones of the blush armadillo rug, artworks and cushions. This warmth is balanced out with hints of olive green leathers, blue velvets and moody green marble.
There is a contemporary modernist feel in the architecture and the spaces are filled with natural light and views out to the garden and landscape beyond.
A mid-century essence of Canberra is drawn through mid-century style pieces such as wishbone dining chairs and Stellarworks feature armchairs which are coupled with more chunky contemporary sofas from Jardan and Coco Republic to add a contemporary edge. Throughout the project, we have taken colour and textural cues from the surrounding natural environment in line with a modernist practice of connecting to and drawing in the landscape.
There is another layer of European furnishings, fittings and styling items such as the coffee table and pendant which add a European eclecticness and style.
We also chose pieces by Australian designers such as Jardan and the Made by Morgen bringing an Australian feel of easy living and understated style. The dining table in back timber, along with other black metal touches helps to ground the spaces, adding contrast and articulation to the overall feel, tying in with the architecture and joinery.
Similarly, on the outdoor terrace, the Cosh living chairs and Mooi table have an architectural quality with both solidity and lightness, playing with texture and light. These pieces are in conversation with the architecture of the home with the textured white brick, black metal balustrades and the architectural forms and voids, playing with the shadows. We’ve added pops of colour through greens and terracottas tying back to the autumnal feel, in the same way as the interior colour palette.
The media family room and roof terrace have a fun relaxed feel. The chunky sectional leather sofa adds a sense of groundedness and is the perfect place to lounge with accents in the side chairs, lamps, objects and artworks imbuing a sense of lightness and fun.
The roof terrace, which acts as an extension of the media room, is practical for an uncovered lounge area, providing a place to soak up the view over the Canberra landscape. Similar to the terrace below, the open frame armchairs from Jardan play with light and shadow and add a pop of colour and lightness next to the more sculptural, tonal coco coffee table.
Throughout the project, there is a layering of modernist design, Canberra’s autumnal hues & tones, a European eclecticness and sophistication and ease of Australian design. All of the items were lovingly chosen and have come together as the finishing touches in this home, to create a beautifully curated, sophisticated and inviting home full of personality and a unique style.
