Following a renovation, this steep and skinny space became the home’s entry and exit, and was always on view from inside. We looked to create an appealing tapestry against a background screen of Ficus hilli ‘Flash’ using a repetition of forms with just enough contrast to remain interesting. Mounds of Elaeagnus, Buxus and Teucrium of different sizes are repeated across two levels, and carried through to the small box plant. The upright forms of Sansevieria, the lively tangle of Donkey’s Tail, and the sculptural form of Aloe ‘Outback Orange’ all provide contrast as does the strong geometry of the built landscape with its retaining walls, steps and floating concrete bench. The garden relies on a subtle composition of colour and form and the overall effect is simple but pleasing.
