Timber re-clad and renovation, Tutukaka, Northland
Turning an older house into a more beautiful, enjoyable and efficient home was the renovation brief from the owners of this Tutukaka property.
Cedar was utilised for a re-clad of the property to give the feeling of luxurious warmth, as well as blending in to the coastal environment. Unique pieces of carpentry were added to create flair and ambience, including custom made cedar louvres, large, sliding, barn-style doors, and a timber spiral staircase linking the hardwood decking across two levels. This created a space where the owners could entertain guests, while enjoying spectacular views of the Tutukaka Coast.
During the renovation, the insulation was replaced with a higher grade, resulting in a more efficient house. A home ventilation system was also installed to provide healthier air throughout the home.
“A fantastic job – very easy to deal with.”
“Sam and his team did a fantastic job, handling a large, full home renovation from the early stages right through to obtaining code of compliance."
There were some problems to overcome and Sam always managed to find practical solutions that suited our time frames. The follow up from his team, checking to see that everything was still ok, was also much appreciated. He is very easy to deal with, honest and trustworthy. I have no hesitation in recommending Sam for any building project, large or small.” – Christine Fullerton
Modern Earth Homes was established in 2017 by Sam and Sandra McGregor. Sam has extensive experience with rammed earth and sustainable building methods. Over the years, he has come to love creating homes for people that are unique and represent the individuality of his clients, using natural building materials and techniques. Sam developed a passion for the solid, warm, dry nature of rammed earth and chose this method to build a beautiful home for his family.
When Sam and Sandra decided to build their own rammed earth home, they didn’t just want a home that was healthy and comfortable. They wanted to build it with minimal environmental impact, with an emphasis on natural building materials and techniques. It was through the process of building their own rammed earth home that the philosophy of Modern Earth Homes was born.
