Hawthorne Street
— Strowan banner

Built to the brief, this home takes advantage of the private north facing outdoor living area while providing privacy to bedrooms and living spaces. An existing swimming pool and concrete terrace with built-in seating were retained to extend out from the new dwelling.

The steeply angled roof planes and second storey peripheral walls are clad in low maintenance metal tray roofing and brick on the single storey. This home is built to tolerate and withstand New Zealand conditions. Contrasting vertical cedar elements, tie in natural characteristics, placed where they can be accessed for easy maintenance.

The house turns its back to the road, with minimal fenestration to the south elevation. The northern aspect, however, tells an entirely different story! Here the structure reaches skyward, with lofty ceilings and full-height windows inviting the landscape in and making the most of the sun’s warmth and light. The Polycarbonate façade comes alive at night, backlit with colour changing LED lighting.

A distinct identity is presented throughout the internal detailing of the home, with raw and natural materials creating a cosy and relaxed atmosphere, that’s not too fussy. Concrete flooring and birch veneer panels in the living room maintain a stylish unrefined feel with featured natural steel lining and stair balustrade and Fijian kauri timber boarding in the ensuite.
