The front elevation of Heberden faces north-west and an ocean view that stretches from Kaikoura to the Southern Alps.
The house as seen from the driveway, shows the garage and the cantilevered terraces from the ground-floor bedrooms and games' room and from the first-floor living area.
A bird's eye view of the site plan shows the outdoor lounge area on astroturf. the spa pool and an outdoor kitchen and dining area leading to the staircase.
Sited on a plot of land that endured slippage during the 2011 Canterbury earthquakes, Heberden is protected by a retaining wall in behind to prevents further land slippage.
The outdoor kitchen and dining area on the roof terrace, surrounded by mostly native landscaping in its infancy, designed by Kamo Marsh.
The northern elevation shows the terrace leading into the living/dining area on the first floor.
The view of Sumner beach and township from the main living area of the house.
The kitchen is a monochromatic palette of black and white, offset by engineered oak flooring. Built-in joinery provides storage throughout the house, including the bookshelf above.
A sleek, minimalist kitchen provides the ideal backdrop to the spectacular view of the Canterbury coastline.
Floor-to-ceiling glazing surrounds the main living area and is slightly tinted to provide some privacy and shade.
On the first floor. the ensuite bathroom from the master bedroom continues the black and white colour scheme from the living area.
The ground-floor bathroom.
Looking down the hallway to the master bedroom suite.
The dramatic stairwell up to the roof terrace.
At the top of the stairwell, a large skylight opens the house up to the sky.

Professionals used in Heberden: building the unbuildable

About the
Professional

Urbanfunction is a design collaborative based in the central city of Christchurch, New Zealand that draws on a range of skill and experience to deliver a diverse range of residential and commercial architectural projects both at home in beautiful Aotearoa and internationally.

Design director Aaron Jones formed both zerobag and urbanfunction on his return from years of working abroad in Melbourne and London.

With 20 years experience in the industry, Aaron draws on a range of global experience. From technical detailing and construction in stadium building to design, detailing and marketing of high end residential and commercial projects for both client and developer.

The importance of Architecture and design within society, we believe is everything. As space, light and visual context affect mood and function within ourselves and those around us, it is critical we live within well considered environments. Considered not only for the purpose of which a building or product is to function but also to it's own environment and surroundings. This forms part of the core philosophy as to how we approach design.
