Leongatha Shed is located in an established garden on a rural property of several acres outside the township of Leongatha in Victoria’s Gippsland region. At the site, we found interest in the agricultural buildings that existed on the property and their adhoc arrangement. These structures have been constructed from a range of materials that are mainly corrugated iron and timber, with an evident grid style structural system. Details such as very large flashings, arrangement of openings characterise this collection of buildings.
The asymmetrical form of Leongatha Shed is intended to establish itself from rudimentary elements and we hope provides a sense of surprise for those who decide to walk around the completed building. The galvanised iron components include large, oversized flashings, canopy elements to omit the summer sun and operable panels to encourage winter afternoon sun. The dwelling has achieved close to 8 stars energy rating.
