Muriwai Drive was designed over many years with a focus on easy flexible living, using best available construction methods in a contemporary style.
The site sits at the foothills of the Whakatane Heads with views of the river, the surf and Moutohora. It is a site with a potent mix of beautiful vistas, harsh coastal weather, vertical geology and is all in a very public area. This presented conflicting parameters to overcome through the architecture.
The placement of walls were critical to maintain privacy from both neighbours and the street. The second storey housing the master bedroom is set back from the front to retreat back from the street and provides another degree of privacy. From this height, views of the sea are maximised. Large areas of glazing allows full views out, while careful placement of external balustrades and gardens provide privacy for the occupier.
Cedar cladding was used with a bevelback horizontal weatherboard profile to reference older houses on the street. The cedar was stained and sealed to give a richness of material and colour to reflect the vibrancy of the area.
