Otuataua Stonefields Heritage Centre celebrates and preserves local heritage, culture, and the environment while strengthening community identity. In partnership with local Iwi, it will showcase taonga, share stories, and offer learning, dining, and retail spaces.

The Heritage Centre at the Otuataua Stonefields is a celebration of heritage, culture, and the environment—an enduring expression of identity and guardianship. Situated within the Mangere Heritage Gateway Area, the Centre stands on land of immense historical and spiritual significance. Formed by volcanic activity over 20,000 years ago and cultivated since the 12th century, the Stonefields are a rare landscape where the stories of both Māori and European settlement are embedded in the earth. The site, once a quarry and now a protected reserve, continues its evolution as a place of learning and preservation through the creation of the Centre.

Developed in partnership with local Iwi, Te Wai o Hua, the Heritage Centre draws from ancestral narratives, including that of Hape’s arrival on the stingray, Kaiwhare—the guardian of the Manukau Harbour. These stories shape both the building’s form and its spiritual essence. The architecture embodies the Māori concept of the three baskets of knowledge—te kete aronui, te kete tuauri, and te kete tuatea—guiding visitors on a journey from darkness to light, symbolizing the gaining of wisdom and understanding.

Entry is through Te Whakatau, a welcoming canopy leading into the Atea, a central gathering and exhibition space that tells the stories of geology, ecology, and human history. The journey continues through the Akoranga and Wānanga/Technology rooms—spaces for learning, making, and reflection—before culminating in the Whare Kaitiaki Kei Tua o Te Arai, a sacred, cave-like chamber for honoring the ancestors and taonga. Subtle lighting, earthen materials, and water rituals heighten the sense of reverence and connection to the land.

Positioned discreetly within the contours of the old quarry, the building is designed to reveal itself gradually, becoming one with its surroundings rather than imposing upon them. Natural materials, careful orientation, and sensitivity to topography, light, and prevailing winds allow the structure to harmonize with the site’s ecological and cultural context. The Whare kai, at the north-west corner, provides a communal space for sharing local food and craft, opening onto terraces that frame views to Manukau Harbour, Te Pae o Mataoho, and beyond.

As an anchor project of the Mangere Gateway Heritage Strategy, the Heritage Centre serves as both a cultural and economic catalyst—enhancing local tourism, education, and employment while affirming the values of manaakitanga (hospitality) and kaitiakitanga (guardianship). It stands as a contemporary vessel for ancient stories, offering a lasting legacy that connects people, place, and time.

“Tucked away on the border of Windsor Park in Hastings, the first substation of its kind in New Zealand is working hard to help power a sustainable future. The Windsor Substation is the beginning of what it could mean for the future of electricity. Windsor Substation was a key opportunity for us to see what we could do differently. We explored a number of sustainability options, to generate our own power, to have sustainability around the water that we use and the materials that we use. Whilst I admit I have a significant bias I do think this is the most beautiful substation I have seen in NZ. Let’s hope it’s the start of a new trend. Thanks so much to all of team for making this into a reality. A special thank you to Charissa for her vision.”
