The award-winning Pā is a pivotal space at Waikato University, and a testament to the collaboration between the design consortiums of Architectus, Jasmax designTRIBE and Wraight & Associates. The design teams worked alongside the Kīngitanga and Tikanga group, as well as with the University, ensuring appropriate narrative, process and protocols were observed in the design of this bi-cultural gateway to the campus.
An original 60’s building was preserved to become the Faculty of Māori and Indigenous Studies, and new structures were built for the wharenui, a University leadership executive wing and a central hub where students gather, study and socialise.
The Pā is designed to be adaptable across multiple uses, including functions such as conferences, hui, graduations, cultural performances and events.
The design team selected eco carpet tiles First Forward and First Define from modulyss. The First Collection utilises pre and post-consumer recycled content, has a GUT A+ rating, and is certified with credits from GECA, BREEAM, LEED, WELL and HQE.
