With a tiny 96m2 to work with, the brief was to create a functional home for a young couple and their dog. We needed to combine a living, dining, kitchen and laundry into one compact room whilst still giving the impression of space.

The opportunity to capture city views, and thus a roof terrace, allowed the ground floor footprint to extend almost to the rear laneway.

An abundance of light gives an illusion of extra space, an impression enhanced by concealing appliances and utilities in seamless joinery units; boxes and planes which provide compositional uniformity through repetition. The window box provides additional seating to the living area, and a courtyard allows light to permeate into central rooms.

We concentrated on creating good quality space within limited space. A home that was elegant and functional for the clients as well as their friends (and the dog) on this pocket-sized site.

Whiting Architects is an Architecture and Interior Design studio with over 25 years of experience.

Director Steven Whiting’s qualifications in both Interior Design and Architecture define the firms’ signature style and form a design philosophy that centers on the premise that there is no separation between disciplines.

The practice views each project holistically as Architects, Interior Designers, and willing collaborators with other disciplines. Producing work that transcends fashion and remains contemporary and robust for years to come.

Integral to their philosophy is the firms’ ability to consider all aspects of the design. Each project is explored thoroughly in 3D from concept to completion. Developed as an exterior object with corresponding interior volume complete with hard landscaping, finishes, joinery and furniture. Each project is a direct response to the site and existing conditions. As a result creating personalized, aesthetically beautiful, bespoke design solutions.
