This project called for the creation of a Zen garden aesthetic, which is a continuation of the client’s spectacular bonsai collection.
This design ties together the ancient Japanese garden ideal with the contemporary design and features of the house. The architecture of the house creates different delineated spatial areas around the house. The planting design strengthens this spatial motif created by the built elements, turning these spaces into ‘living’ rooms.
The planting creates privacy, structural interest, and different areas to exist within the site. The planting is a combination of New Zealand natives and exotic plants with a Japanese flavour.
