The house has been designed to sit wide and low within its surroundings, presenting a somewhat brutalist face to the street. The precast wall contains a small courtyard that provides sheltered outdoor living.
The plan features two separate forms, one private (containing the garage and guest bedrooms) painted black and one public, which has been left as raw concrete.
Directly off the entrance is a large gallery space, which serves as the dividing element between the private and public spaces.
The guest bedrooms have been each been given their own scheme, with deep, luscious colours and textures.
Timber-look tiles have been used on the walls of the bathrooms to echo the darkly stained exterior concrete finish.
A pair of antique Egyptian villa doors adds a unique touch to the interior, imparting a sense of patina in an otherwise pared-back and refined scheme.
A trio of ornate gilt mirrors bring a sense of drama to the powder room.
The statement wallpaper adds a further layer of plush elegance with its quilted velvet appearance.
Timaru bluestone in two different depths has been used to clad the fireplace, again mimicking the board-formed concrete exterior.
Located within the relatively recently developed suburb of Kennedys Bush, this property offered unobstructed views across the Canterbury Plains towards the Southern Alps.
A simple, pared-back palette of black and white, punctuated with timber and stone textures, forms the basis of the open-plan living area and provides a neutral backdrop to several large artworks.
Recessed lighting around the ceiling and beneath the high-level cabinetry and island bench adds a subtle visual note, playing off the highly polished surface of the floor and more matte walls and ceiling planes.
In keeping with the form of the house, the large island bench is low and wide with a mix of horizontal and vertical lines, which have been picked up in the wall cabinetry and also in the scullery.
The L-shaped 'public' pavilion seamlessly leads onto a large deck area, which in turns leads down to a courtyard space. The master bedroom suite is located in this form, allowing the house to function for a couple just as comfortably as it does a family.
The master bedroom features a cultivated palette of neutral shades and highly tactile textures to create the refined yet homely feel requested.
A picture window provides a far-reaching vista to enjoy from the free-standing tub.
Straddling the east-west axis and facing north, the main living area of the house is suffused with natural light.
Extending past the building envelope, the deck features a 'cantilevered' element that helps create a sense of the house being at one with the natural environment.
Board-formed concrete imparts a textural feel to the exterior, in counterpoint to the raw finish of the concrete used on the 'public' pavilion.
A black, timber stain was used on the exterior of the 'private' pavilion to provide contrast with the 'public' one. Similarly, an expressed window treatment on the one balances the recessed treatment of the other.
Landscaping was established at the same time the house was being built so that it would be sufficiently bedded in when the building was complete.
The two concrete wall elements help to block neighbouring properties when guests are seated in the courtyard space.
