The Takahanga Domain sports clubroom is a critical community asset, and the loss of the old building following the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake presented an opportunity to create a structure that could better serve the community's needs.
Collaborating closely with the sports committee, we established a clear brief to design a building that could cater for current and future sporting requirements at Takahanga Domain. Our primary goal was to meet the needs of the sports teams, including rugby and netball facilities, while also providing a function space that could serve as a hub for social and community events.
Any commercial building that has to service multiple users is always challenging, but we embraced the opportunity. As we developed the design, we recognised the site's significant cultural heritage. Working closely with Te Rūnanga o Kaikōura was essential in ensuring a sensitive approach that respects the rich Māori history of the area.
Our design prioritises high-quality facilities for the sports teams, but also offers excellent viewing experiences for spectators, both on the large deck and inside. Additionally, the large function room offers breathtaking views of the beautiful coastal and mountain scenery, making it perfect for community events and gatherings.
We’re proud to have designed a building that meets the needs of the sports club, while also providing a space that the wider community can enjoy.
