This is a spectacular peninsular site with fabulous views in most directions, particularly towards the harbour entrance. Full advantage was taken of the views with almost every room offering an outlook either over the harbour or into a grove of Pohutukawa trees.
Our client requested we integrated a French provincial flavour and to incorporate some large old hardwood beams in the design.
The house was designed to wrap around a gently rising front entrance which leads to a pavilion living area opening on three sides. This offered the entrance a welcome intimacy in contrast to the surrounding openness and heightened the expectation of the stupendous views to come.
The hardwood beams were used in pergolas at the entry and barbecue areas and for exposed trusses in the living room pavilion, softening the links between indoors and outdoors.
