Stunning vistas and a private garden oasis next to the Waimate Stream make this Canterbury home a space for the whole family to enjoy.

With a long history in Waimate, the clients of this home wanted something special – a space that would honour the town they love so much and be a sanctuary from the demands of their family-owned business.

Before even entering the front door, it’s easy to see the love that has been poured into this project. A corten steel arched sculpture stands proudly beside the home – a material that has also been used as cladding and complements the manicured landscaping that stretches beyond.

Perched above the garden in a ‘V’ formation, the home consists of two pavilions – one dressed in the stunning corten which will patina and blend into the landscape over time, and the other clad in a contrasting plaster facade system.

Brought to life by David Reid Homes Waitaki, the ‘wow’-factor continues inside the 380sqm design. Positioned on the north-west side of the property, the steel-clad pavilion is dedicated to the living spaces.

“The clients milled their own oak, which we laid in the kitchen and master bedroom,” says David Reid Homes’ Nikki Mackay. Bringing a warmth to the cooking space, this hardwood has also been used for the joists above the kitchen – the foundation for the above mezzanine level that is used as a sitting area.

A black Caesarstone benchtop contrasts with the oak and amplifies the texture of the kitchen cabinetry.

“The cabinetry looks like a flat wall, but within the cabinetry is a coffee-making station right by the window. There is also a hidden door that opens to the scullery and wine room – but the only thing you see are the handles to the fridge, which is amazing.”

The rest of this space has a sense of grandeur with the steel framing of the gabled design on display. Here, the ceiling is clad in white PlyPlay with negative detailing that travels down one of the walls.

Completely open-plan, this dining and living area has polished concrete flooring and floor-to-ceiling glazing that extends to the apex of the gable to capture the view of the landscaping and alpine vista beyond.

Wrapped around the rear of the home with steps that lead to the immaculate garden and water's edge, the deck can be accessed from here. A courtyard sits between the pavilions sheltered from the wind, with a spa and pool found at the other end, built into the decking.

Inspired by the surrounding environment, sage green walls with recessed oak skirtings feature through the home and are a canvas for the family’s art collection.

“The artwork in the home really reflects their travel together,” says Nikki, and a gallery-like space connects the two wings.

“The second wing has the utility area, and two bedrooms with a Jack and Jill bathroom. From the hallway you then enter the master bedroom which has a walk-in-wardrobe and ensuite.

“It’s a stunning, beautiful home; a design we haven’t built before that’s unique to the homeowners.”
