The room dimensions and the client preferences forced the design into the dreaded “U” shape. To add to my “U” issues I added a “G” at the other end of the kitchen, hence the UG. The only thing missing was the “LY”, so determined not to complete the noun I set about meeting the client brief which was a mid-century theme with a modern twist.
A busy family of 5 with multiple users meant expansive bench space and double sinks were required. Both adults were tall so bench heights were raised to 950mm and side by side ovens at 670mm personalised the kitchen for them.
The microwave and messy kid related secondary meal area was hidden away in the G spot. Mid height ovens and open framed shelving above the fridge cabinets let borrowed light flow into this area creating a naturally lit, screened work station.
The nod to the mid-century theme lay in the bullnose peninsular wrapped in horizontal grained Oak. Horizontal reeded glass doors concealing a drink station above an integrated bar fridge. The modern twist was the black frame work, micro thin tops and partial length shark fin handle.
Like all U shaped kitchens they are a bugger to photograph but really nice to work in. This was no exception. It might not have the legs of an European model but its got the girth of a home cooking Italian Nonna…who would you rather have in your kitchen?
