Browntown Builders have undertaken a transformative project for a state house located on the steep slopes in Lyttelton. The aim was to maximize the breathtaking views across Lyttelton harbour and beyond, while creating a harmonious blend of new and existing elements.

The key feature of the design is the addition of a staggered upper floor that sits gracefully above the original structure. This strategic placement allows for carefully selected views of the picturesque harbour in one direction, fostering a strong connection to the site and providing access to inviting outdoor living areas in the other direction. The upper floor is designed to be flooded with natural light, creating a bright and open atmosphere that complements the lower floors, which offer more intimate and serene spaces.

In line with their commitment to sustainable practices, Browntown Builders have incorporated reclaimed native timbers throughout the house. One notable highlight is the upper level Kauri ceiling, which adds a touch of natural beauty and warmth to the space. Additionally,  meticulous attention was paid to detail, as evidenced by the 1mm negative detailing in the Fijian ply used throughout the construction. This attention to craftsmanship and design excellence permeates every aspect of this inviting dwelling, resulting in a warm and inviting whare that celebrates the best of both worlds.
