A purpose-built student accommodation project delivering 53 self-contained studio apartments, designed to balance efficiency, durability and comfort within a compact campus site.
Delivering high-quality student accommodation requires a careful balance between efficiency, comfort and long-term performance. The Silverdale Road Apartments were designed to meet this challenge, creating a compact and well-considered living environment for postgraduate and mature students at the University of Waikato.
Won through a competitive design and build process, the project brings together 53 self-contained studio apartments across three two-storey buildings. Each unit provides a private living space with its own kitchen, bathroom and study area, while shared facilities support a sense of community within the development.
The design focused on simplicity and clarity. Each apartment was carefully planned to maximise natural light, creating warm and comfortable interiors despite the compact footprint. Material selection prioritised durability and ease of maintenance, with a combination of precast concrete panels, timber framing and robust cladding systems ensuring long-term value for the University.
Efficiency was central to both the design and delivery. Repetition across the building forms allowed for a streamlined construction process, while thoughtful planning ensured strong acoustic performance and functional living spaces. The project was delivered within a tight timeframe and completed in time for the start of the academic year.
The result is a practical and enduring addition to the campus, supporting independent student living while contributing to a connected and vibrant university environment.
