The family home of architect Clive Chapman of Pacific Environments Architects in Auckland. The gable roof, the vertical siding, the small windows and the strength of the concrete and corten steel are all references to the industrial shed feel that Clive wanted.
The custom routed acoustic ceiling pattern was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. The homeowners found the two Falcon chairs online. “That classic Swedish modern style fits perfectly within those Case Study Houses that were one of the design precedents for this project. The purple couch we had made by BoConcept because we just wanted a splash of colour. Before becoming an architect, I did a degree in underwater archaeology and excavated boats. One of the projects I worked on was in Turkey, where I bought this rug for my then-girlfriend who's now my wife.”
“All this cabinetry is made from the floorboards of the original house. Our cabinetmaker split it so that it's thinner. They set it up in their factory and played with all the pieces to get this really lovely, finished geometry.” A hidden door in the kitchen leads to the master bedroom. “I've always been fascinated by the whole idea of secret doors and the idea that things are happening beyond the obvious."
“That fireplace basically heats all of this area. We do have some ducted heat pumps. But to be honest, in the summer, we leave all the windows open and don't need it and in the winter, we light the fireplace at five o'clock and it heats the house all evening.” Clive has collected some second-hand furniture. “I like something that's got a little life to it. It's got a history rather than something brand new.” The Michael Draper table under the stairs was bought when he closed down his factory. “So I've just cleaned all the grease off it, and we've had it for years. I keep putting it into whichever house we live in.”
Clive wanted to separate the stairwell but not put in a solid wall. He considered black netting before trying the metal rods, framing them into panels to stop them flexing. “It was an aesthetic that just developed, and met my design idea to keep the hallway as open as possible.”
The house has four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a powder room. The walls are painted in Resene Snowdrift, which is offset by all steel being painted in Resene Nero.
Smaller windows on the driveway side of the house offer improved privacy. “The garage is half full of bikes, skis and sports gear,” says Clive.
Clive and his wife were in agreement on most decisions. The black tile in the bathroom was the only thing Clive had to convince her of. “It took a while to persuade her but in the end she is very happy with the look."
The upstairs living room is very useful with teenage children. “The kids tend to use it when they have friends over. In the summertime the large sliding windows can be left open to ventilate the house. We can leave it open without any security issues because it has the slats across it, which also double as sun control.”
The house was positioned so a driveway could fit down the side, in case of future development of the large site.
A large site means room for a pool. Landscape is also important and we designed around several existing mature trees, says Clive. “We have an arborist check all our trees on a regular basis, you have to when you get really big mature trees.”
“Because all the upstairs rooms are single-sided you can’t achieve cross flow ventilation. So we used double hung sashes, like you get in the old villas, which allow hot air to exit at the top as cool air comes in the bottom.” The added benefit of a large patio is the family can plan outdoor movie nights: the concrete lower portion of the garage wall was always intended to serve as an outdoor screen.
