Whitford House
Role: Concept Design through to approved Building Consent.
Client's project managed their own construction.

Status: Construction completed.

The project was to design a dream home for the owners and their family with 4 car garaging. They favoured a classic and contemporary architecture that is timeless.

The site is located up a long driveway up a hill in rural Whitford, thereby the house is situated in a secluded location and is designed to sit within the natural contours of the site. The owners favoured brick veneer construction for a robust construction of their house.

The house entrance opens up into a double-height void with a grand waterfall feature glass wall below a walkway bridge that connects the bedrooms upstairs. Good indoor/ outdoor flow is provided with the open plan living/ kitchen/ dining facing north to maximise daylighting and providing views to the nearby woods of pine trees and privacy from the visible neighbours from the distance.
The house is orientated to obtain the best views of the expansive rural views of the countryside and its rolling hills.

The architect was not involved in the construction administration of the project as the owner project managed their own construction with their selected builder. To respect the confidentiality of the client, no photos are allowed to be taken or shared as requested by the client. The actual construction of the house turned out even more beautiful in reality than the 3d visual perspective envisioned. The house is a delight to come home to at the end of a day’s work.

About the
Professional

Andesite creates signature projects of architecture and light as a synthesis of design, function and context. We aim for quality and innovation in architecture. We are involved in projects throughout New Zealand, based in Queenstown.
Our vision for architecture is a contemporary and timeless design. We encourage energy-efficient designs that continually push boundaries and innovation in architecture. We engage in environmentally sustainable design and construction in our approach towards architecture – and architecture of quality and distinction.
The practice was established in 2010 and is involved in mostly residential architecture throughout New Zealand. We have a special interest in integrating quality lighting design in architecture, both in terms of maximizing natural daylight design and application of artificial lighting design. We engage in the use and play of light within the architectural space as an expression of the poetics of architecture.
